Associate Project Manager
Blue Oak Consulting
Date: 2 weeks ago
City: Birmingham
Contract type: Full time
We are seeking an Associate Project Manager to help coordinate a complex advisory assignment for our client, a major UK infrastructure firm. This key engagement requires tracking multiple streams of analysis, organizing stakeholder updates, and helping verify that our economic findings translate into clear operational steps. You will join our collaborative advisory team to support work where ensuring the rigorous execution of our recommendations is vital.
About Blue Oak Consulting
Blue Oak Consulting is an independent advisory firm focused on commercial decisions where the answer is not obvious. We help management teams and investors look past standard corporate strategy presentations to see the real financial consequences of their choices. Our work centers on testing the economic logic behind pricing architecture, capital allocation, and acquisition assumptions. Rather than deploying massive teams of generalist consultants, we work on lean, project-based engagements that require deep skepticism and a focus on what the actual numbers are hiding. We are often called in to surface hidden distortions in portfolio economics or to stress test growth plans that rely on heroic assumptions. Because we are independent and not compensated based on transaction outcomes, we have the freedom to tell clients when the economics of a deal do not hold. We stay through the execution phase to ensure that the logic of a decision survives real-world friction.
The role
As an Associate Project Manager, you will be the coordinator who keeps our core advisory project running smoothly. This is an entry-level position where you will work directly with our senior consultants as we stress test the operational and financial assumptions of a major infrastructure program. This is a hybrid role, offering a balance between remote analysis and standard in-person team collaboration sessions to review complex data models and client inputs. Rather than managing from a distance, you will be in the detail every day, learning how to structure project timelines, manage deliverables, and ensure that our critical findings are communicated clearly and accurately.

What you will be doing
- Tracking project milestones and organizing regular updates for the advisory team and client stakeholders.
- Reviewing incoming client financial and operational documents to ensure data is complete and accurate.
- Working alongside senior consultants to prepare progress updates that highlight project risks.
- Reviewing draft reports to ensure logical consistency and absolute accuracy.
- Supporting the stress testing of growth plans by flagging gaps in the data we receive.
- Documenting decisions and material changes to project scope or analytical assumptions.
- Strong organizational skills and an ability to manage multiple moving parts without losing track of details.
- An analytical mindset with a healthy sense of skepticism regarding standard corporate assumptions.
- Clear, direct communication skills, allowing you to explain project updates without jargon.
- Basic comfort with spreadsheets and a capacity to learn how we structure economic models.
- A collaborative approach, ready to work in our hybrid environment combining remote focus with in-person review sessions.
- No consulting background required: we need clear logic and a desire to learn how transactions operate.
- An entry-level opportunity to learn project management and economic advisory from senior experts.
- Attractive and competitive pay for this entry-level position.
- A balanced hybrid working arrangement that combines remote analysis with collaborative in-person meetings.
- Direct exposure to high-stakes decision-making and real-world capital allocation problems.
- A workplace culture that values evidence and analytical rigor over corporate fluff.
- A permanent, full-time employment contract with opportunities to grow your skills.
