Job Overview
The Emergency Department (ED) at the Glan Clwyd District General Hospital has an annual attendance of approximately 58,000 patients, and sees the full range of presentations from major trauma, to complex medical presentations, critical illness, and paediatric emergencies. The ED has excellent support from and close working relationships with the inpatient medical, paediatric, critical care, radiology, and surgical specialty teams.
Main duties of the job
Specialty Doctor Emergency Department
The duties of the Specialty Doctor in ED will be predominantly clinical. However there will be involvement in the teaching and support of junior staff. The specialty doctor will be expected to make a full contribution to clinical governance and audit for which one session is allowed subject to ongoing appraisal. The post holder will be supported in their professional development, will gain excellent clinical experience, and would be especially but not exclusively of interest to anyone considering undertaking Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).If required further experience in the allied specialties such as Paediatrics, Critical Care, Acute Medicine etc. can be arranged.

Applications are invited for the above post in the Emergency Department based at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. Additional sessions can be arranged at mutual convenience and scope exists for flexible working and individualised job planning subject to service needs. The appointment is subject to the national Terms and Conditions of service for Specialty Doctors. There will be a requirement to work a variety of shifts on the rota which compromise of day, afternoon, evening, twilight and night shifts.
As part of the Health Board’s strategic collaboration with Bangor University, individuals with an interest in teaching and research who can demonstrate and agree a possible contribution to the School can be considered and nominated for recognition through the University’s process for granting honorary titles and help to deliver our shared vision for the North Wales School of Medicine and Health.

Specialty doctors also have full access to the services at the hospital post-graduate department including the lecture theatre programme and the hospital library and IT suite.
Study leave of upto 10 days per year for specialty doctors will be provided and funded, and the hospital holds APLS, ALS and ATLS training courses.
Specialty doctors must also maintain a record of CPD activities and support will be available to help with annual appraisal and revalidation requirements.

- MRCEM
- Two of the following Certificates APLS(or PALS) Provider ATLS Provider ALS Provider
Essential Criteria
- Evidence that he / she is not infectious for Hepatitis B.
- Negative Hepatitis C result.
Essential criteria
- One years experience in Emergency Medicine or General Medicine.
- Wide experience in dealing with acute medical emergencies and injuries.
- Experience of Leading a Trauma Team.
- Experience in Acute Paediatrics, ITU or Anaesthesia.
Essential Criteria
- Evidence of understanding of Clinical audit and Clinical Effectiveness activity.
- Experience of Clinical Risk Monitoring and Major Incident Readiness.
- Evidence of Interest in Trauma related Research.
Essential Criteria
- Prepared to live within 15 miles or 20mins by road from the hospital in normal traffic conditions.
- Prepared to be screened by N.Wales Police in connection with the Children’s Act.
Essential Criteria
- Commitment to Training of Medical Staff, Nursing staff, Medical Students and Paramedic colleagues.
- Up to date CPD or training portfolio
Essential criteria
- Evidence of ability to communicate effectively in English with patients and Colleagues verbally and in writing.
- Welsh Speaker or a willingness to learn the Welsh language.

- Demonstrate an ability to organise work effectively, take considered decisions whilst under pressure, And to make clear and concise documentation.
