Main duties of the job

Cellular Pathology invites applications for the post of Specialist Biomedical Scientist with a background in cellular pathology to join their friendly team. An excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and suitably experienced individual to contribute to a rapidly developing service. The department supports ROSE clinics, a Mohs service & there is scanning equipment to support the digital agenda. The post-holder will be encouraged to participate in this project as we progress to a fully digitised pathology service. The department operates 6am-7pm Mon-Fri & Sat 7am-5pm. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the rotational Bank Holiday service-approx. 1 per annum, currently not Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day or Good Friday, & the 'on-call' rota. Applicants are expected to have attained the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology, however the department also invites applications from those that are working towards this & would be able to complete within 12 months. This post also present excellent opportunities for personal development and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is also actively supported. The laboratory is IBMS & NSHCS approved for the training and education of undergraduate, graduate and STP students and is UKAS accredited.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The Main responsibilities and skills required for the roles will include:

Undertake processing of histological and cytological specimens for diagnostic and monitoring purposes.

Provide accurate, timely, and appropriate analytical data/results.

Communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals to support excellent patient care.

Assist with quality management systems tasks for compliance with regulatory and or accrediting bodies.

Deliver training and education within the specialist section.

Maintain a high standard of professional competence in the performance of all test and investigations carries out in the laboratory.

Attention to detail, working under pressure, teamwork and well-developed interpersonal skills.

The ideal candidate will have cellular pathology laboratory experience in a range of different areas, to include specifically embedding and microtomy, frozens, special stains & histochemistry. Other desirable experience would include, cytology, mohs and neuropathology.

The department operates a 6-day working pattern (approximately 1 in 5 Saturday shifts) and extended opening hours:06.00 - 19.00 Monday - Friday07.00 - 17.00 Saturday. We also run an on-call service and successful candidates will be required to participate in this after training has been given. The laboratories are sited at Southampton General Hospital within purpose-built modern and well-equipped facilities providing comprehensive diagnostic services delivering both routine and specialist testing to patients from the Wessex Region and several external referral sites.

Cellular Pathology includes neuropathology, paediatric pathology, immunohistochemistry, histology research and development and incorporates the departments of cytology, biomedical imaging, electron microscopy and the provision of adult and paediatric mortuary services to the hospital, City Council, and local coroners.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience

Essential criteria

  • HCPC approved Biomedical Science degree (BSc) or other HCPC approved degree/top ups
  • HCPC registered
  • Evidence of current CPD activities
  • Significant previous experience in a medical laboratory
  • IBMS specialist portfolio (in relevant discipline) or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • IT competency (hospital IT systems, Outlook, Microsoft)
  • Experience in a large acute hospital laboratory
