  • To co-ordinate the organisation and management of the Gastro Investigations Unit, with the support of the Senior Staff Nurses.
  • To assist the multidisciplinary health care team in the timely provision of a managed service, treatment and supportive care to children and their families referred to the Gastroenterology Investigation Unit for both inpatients and day care patients.
  • To promote family centred care and establish good relationships with children and their families.
  • To lead and work as part of the Gastroenterology team in supporting the service.
  • Welcome and receive patients and family’s to the Unit
  • Provide support to parents/carer, organise meals for patients directly admitted to the Gastro Unit.
  • Undertake clinical observations; temperature, pulse, respiratory and heart rate and report any abnormalities to a trained nurse
  • Undertake height/weight measurement
  • Work as a member of the health care team to assist with the planning, assessment, implementation and evaluation of the care for the children attending the Gastroenterology Investigation Unit
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with the children, families and staff, and provide information regarding plans for future appointments to the families
  • To assist with clinical procedures carried out by the healthcare team as appropriate:
  • Assist the Nurses/CNS’s/Medical staff with procedures in consultation with the Sister.
  • Promote, monitor, and maintain a clean, healthy, safe and secure environment for patients, families and staff and ensure the safe use and maintenance of equipment
  • Keep accurate and up to date records of care provided eg theatre database information.
  • To participate in any relevant audits that the unit may be involved in
  • To support families through distressing and emotional events within the Department
  • Liaise with the appropriate teams when there are communication differences or difficulties
