The Senior Environmental Consultant sits within the UK Environment and Sustainability team and will report into the UK Head of Climate and Environmental Sustainability. The internal facing aspect of this role will involve engagement with internal functions, business units, bid teams and client account teams as well as technologists to help implement our UK Climate & Environmental Sustainability Strategy and related work programme.
The external facing aspect will involve collaboration with suppliers to facilitate progress towards our net zero targets as well as evolving our capability to measure and reduce the environmental impacts of our digital service offerings. In addition, you will liaise with clients to understand their needs & expectations and shaping contract-level environmental sustainability plans & reporting to ensure we deliver against our commercial agreements.
The candidate is expected to have a proven track record as an environmental lead with extensive experience of environmental reporting and an ability to communicate information of a specialist nature with clarity, brevity and impact.to be able to influence stakeholders.
You will be a common link across various teams to support our UK operations as well as support engagement with the Sopra Steria Group, our parent company in France.
This role is UK based with a hybrid way of working allowing flexibility to work from home and a local office ideally in Manchester or Leeds. There will be a requirement to attend meetings in London and Manchester.

What you will be doing:
- Prepare annual Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions and energy consumption data for inclusion statutory disclosures and commercial deliverables, e.g. SECR, ESOS, Mandatory Climate-related Financial Disclosures, PPN 006 Carbon Reduction Plans, etc.
- Provide support with the production, implementation, monitoring, review and refinement of plans to achieve our corporate environmental objectives & targets.
- Responsible and accountable for establishing, implementing and maintaining effective processes to ensure UK data in the Sopra Steria Group ESG Dashboard tool is accurate, complete, reliable and traceable.
- Produce environmental KPI monitoring reports.
- Maintain auditable evidence packs to ensure environmental disclosures and claims are true and verifiable.
- Produce and analyse metrics that enable effective monitoring, identification of trends and facilitate improvement of environmental performance.
- Perform relevant quantitative analysis and modelling to support management of climate-related risks and opportunities.
- Write bid responses.
- Provide advice and support to client account teams for developing plans to solution services in a way that reduces their environmental impact throughout contract delivery.
- Calculate and report contract-level GHG emissions (as per terms and conditions inserted into UK government that align with PPN 016).
- Production and presentation of environmental scorecards and other reporting as agreed with clients.
- Work with colleagues in the UK and across Group to establish methodologies for measuring the environmental impacts of IT and digital technology & services, including AI.Provide support to increase awareness and buy-in to embed digital sustainability best practices to reduce the environmental impacts related to the way Sopra Steria designs, builds, delivers and evolves digital technology & services.
- Membership of ISEP (formerly IEMA)
- Proven experience for calculating Scope 1, 2 and 3 (in particular Purchased Goods & Services emissions.
- Basic knowledge of the environmental impacts of IT and digital technologies with a drive to expand and apply learning.
- Proven experience in calculating environmental impacts of IT e.g. PUE of data centres.
- Depth in technical knowledge with an ability to converse and provide advice around Climate Change, Net Zero, Science Based Targets, Carbon Offsetting, Energy Efficiency, Water and Biodiversity.
- Knowledge of UK Government climate change & environmental sustainability schemes, e.g. PPN 006 & 016, Government Buying Standards, Greening Government Commitments).
- Experience of working with teams, in a challenging and demanding environment, across large complex organisations.
- Ability to deliver outputs, within a busy working environment, against set objectives and deadlines
- Good verbal and written communication including the ability to present ideas in a collaborative, professional and credible manner.
- A Masters degree in an environment or sustainability related subject
- Competency in MS Excel and Power BI.
- Experience in completing the CDP Climate Change questionnaire.
- Knowledge of EU Taxonomy and Code of Conduct for Data Centres
