Your new school

Hays are recruiting a SEN Teaching Assistant to work Full-Time in Rhondda Cynon Taf for a Special Educational Needs School which caters for pupils aged 3-19 with a variety of additional learning needs and aspects of challenging behaviour. Within this role you shall support a small classroom of students with ASD aged between 8 and 12 with varying levels of challenging behaviour. Many of the students are non-verbal. The role shall also involve offering ad-hoc 1:1 support for students who struggle with a particular task or become overwhelmed. The school is highly regarded as a well-run and well-resourced educational facility. The school provides a fantastic standard of education and support for its students, some of whom have severe and pronounced learning difficulties. The school creates and maintains a safe and enjoyable learning environment where all are given a fair and equal chance to succeed. The staff are passionate about their work and are there to support students and fellow staff alike. The school are eager to add passionate, caring, and personable new members to their team.

Your new role

Duties

The role is confirmed long-term for an immediate start date, working full-time 5 days a week. However, the school are also looking for part-time staff, as well as those who may not be available until a later date. Duties relating to this role include but are not limited to:

  • Working with a small group of students with ASD and related challenging behaviour between the ages of 8 and 12.
  • Offering support to students with a wide range of sometimes severe learning difficulties.
  • Creating and maintaining a safe, positive, and enjoyable learning environment even when placed under pressure.
  • Demonstrating high levels of patience and empathy when dealing with challenging behaviour.
  • Assisting teachers when implementing their lesson plans by ensuring that the children are engaged and cared for throughout.
  • Working closely as part of a quick, efficient, and consistent team with other members of the teaching staff to provide the best care possible for the pupils.

What you'll need to succeed

To be considered for this role, it is required that you possess at least 40 days of relevant experience working or volunteering within a school or with children over the course of the last 2 – 3 years. Some of the key attributes and skills needed for this role include empathy, patience, and calmness. Further desired traits include responsiveness, problem-solving skills, commitment, and a high degree of motivation.

A desired qualification is to be Team Teach trained.
