Position summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and creative R&D Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design, prototyping, and testing of novel upright patient positioning systems that are compatible with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This is a unique opportunity to shape a new generation of upright radiotherapy solutions in a collaborative environment. In addition to this primary focus, the successful candidate will contribute to a variety of other early-stage engineering projects and play a key role in driving innovation across the company.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the end-to-end mechanical design of MRI-compatible upright patient positioning systems—from concept through to prototyping and testing
  • Investigate user needs, human factors, ergonomics and safety considerations
  • Collaborate with clinical and scientific partners to inform and validate design decisions.
  • Select appropriate (MRI compatible) materials, with an emphasis on composites
  • Develop and manage detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and technical documentation in compliance with internal and industry standards
  • Conduct feasibility studies, tolerance analyses, and risk assessments.
  • Perform stress, fatigue, and structural analyses using FEA tools to ensure mechanical integrity.

  • Support broader R&D initiatives and contribute to Leo Cancer Care’s strategic innovation pipeline.

Essential Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in mechanical design engineering.
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline; master's preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to take designs from initial concept to low-volume production.
  • Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and 2D drawing generation with tolerancing.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and a problem-solving mindset.
  • Knowledge of materials science, manufacturing techniques (e.g., machining, injection moulding, 3D printing), and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Hands-on experience with various prototyping methods.
  • Proficiency in FEA tools for mechanical and structural simulations.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills across disciplines and geographies.
  • Ability to represent Leo Cancer Care externally and contribute to scientific dialogue.

Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with SolidWorks PDM.
  • Experience with mathematical modeling, static load FEA studies, and relevant regulatory standards (e.g., ISO 60601, ISO 13485, ISO 14971).
  • Background in the medical device industry or other regulated environments.
  • Experience in industry-led R&D, applied research, technology transfer, or IP development.
  • Awareness of radiotherapy and MRI technologies (training will be provided as needed).

About Leo Cancer Care

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. With around 1 in 3 people diagnosed at some point in their lives, it’s a challenge that touches us all. Radiation Therapy is a cornerstone of cancer treatment – around 50% of all cancer patients should receive it. Yet, due to the cost, size, and complexity of conventional equipment, millions of people globally are unable to access this life-saving care.

Conventional Radiation Therapy involves a patient lying on a table while a large machine rotates around them, delivering radiation beams from various angles to target the tumour. Many patients describe this experience as passive and disempowering, feeling like passengers during their own treatment journey.

Leo Cancer Care was founded with a clear mission: to bring a more human approach to cancer treatment - one that empowers patients and puts them at the centre of their care. By shifting from supine to upright patient positioning, imaging, and treatment, we are creating a paradigm shift in Radiation Therapy. Our goal is to improve accessibility, quality, and dignity in cancer care across the globe.

We are looking for enthusiastic, driven individuals to join our passionate team. At Leo Cancer Care, you’ll work alongside a world-class team developing the treatments of tomorrow. Our work spans multiple disciplines, all united by a shared commitment to driving meaningful change in the lives of cancer patients.
