Job Description
We are the Environment Agency. An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Field Operations department at our Sale depot for a Principal Depot Liaison Officer, being part of a team that maintain and operate the flood defences in and around the Greater Manchester region, protecting thousands of homes and business from flooding each year.
This is a hands on, manual role where working outside and regular manual handling will be expected for which training will be provided. It involves:
The team
The team delivers a maintenance program on watercourses throughout the Greater Manchester area, maintaining and operating flood and costal risk management assets ensuring their optimal performance in safeguarding communities.
We respond to flooding and environmental incidents both day and night and we assist other areas in incident response and environmental incidents.
You will have an incident role on a 24 hour call out rota. This may attract additional payment and full training will be available.
Experience/skills Required
The ideal candidate is self sufficient and has a methodical approach to work and planning. Friendly, helpful, and willing to work with others. You will be assessed for these skills and behaviours over a six-month probation period
Essential: You should demonstrate the ability to deliver results where performance targets are crucial and problems must be resolved quickly.
Good organisational skills and a proven ability to work under pressure during incidents is essential.
You must understand site health and safety requirements.
Strong people skills and the ability to motivate and engage others, be comfortable with managing external suppliers, such as equipment maintainers and logistics/transport staff visiting the site.
Basic understanding of IT, including smart phones and tables, and willing to learn our in-house systems.
Familiarity with MS applications (especially Excel and Word).
Experienced on Telehandler, forklift and trailer towing is an advantage although full training will be provided.

- Planning and supervising the day-to-day running of the Environment Agency Principal Depot at Sale, Manchester, duties including the secure storage, maintenance and deployment of equipment such as pumps, flood barriers and incident command vehicle.
- Help manage our stock of flood risk management assets and liaise with national colleagues and our professional partners.
- Maintain an up-to-date asset inventory, logging equipment and it status , and managing the movement of deployed assets.
- Being responsible for managing our small tools, lifting equipment, life jackets and PPE for Field teams based at our Sale depot.
- Ensuring that plant and fleet vehicles are maintained to a high standard and that all checks have been undertaken to maintain compliance.
- Possess sufficient skill and knowledge of information technology to be able to keep and up-to-date inventory for maintaining the supply and demand of equipment.
- Understand the Health and Safety risks, including but not limited to, maintaining depot standards and using plant and equipment while protecting the environment.
- Deliver incident response training to colleagues.
