Job Description

We are looking for a Team Manager to be part of the National Internal Investigation Service (NIIS). You will lead a small team of investigators and case support officers who provide specialist investigatory services for complex employee relations cases.

In your role you will be:

  • leading the team, providing direction and supporting them to deliver to their full potential; looking after their health, safety and wellbeing and helping them develop.
  • assuring quality service delivery and driving continuous improvement of investigation practice
  • undertaking investigations for complex employee relations cases


You will be closely with Legal services and Defra HR. Through this partnership working, you will identify good practice and learning to share with the wider business.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be asked to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment, and full training will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team

The NIIS team are part of the Risk and Assurance department in the Strategy, Transformation and Assurance directorate.

The team of investigators and case support officers provide specialist investigatory services for complex and sensitive employee relations cases such as whistleblowing, grievance, disciplinary, and fraud.

This is a hybrid working role managing a dispersed team, the successful candidate can be based at any Environment Agency office. Some travel will be required to attend meetings.

Experience/skills Required

The successful candidate will have experience of the following:

  • leading a team; providing leadership, direction and support.
  • assuring quality service delivery and driving continuous improvement of investigation practice
  • undertaking complex employee relations investigations and reviews


Your skills will include:

  • Excellent organisational skills to manage multiple priorities and conflicting demands
  • Excellent communication skills as you will be working with a diverse range of people
  • Working collaboratively with the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships
  • Sound understanding of the Environment Agency’s guidance and associated best practice relevant to undertaking grievance, disciplinary and other investigations.
  • Confidence reviewing complex review documents, able to challenge firmly and constructively when required.
  • Driving continuous improvement through policy and practice


Ideally, You Will Also Have Relevant HR/investigation Qualifications
