Main duties of the job
Our caseloading teams (known as NEST) provide antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care to a diverse population of birthing people and their families within Southampton city. Our criteria includes those with additional vulnerabilities, those from a Global Majority specific ethnicity group with additional risk factors and those wishing to birth at home. You will work within a small team who are self-rostering to provide on-call labour care (on average one long labour day / one night per week) to ensure cover across the week and a good work/home life balance.
Working in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team, safeguarding and perinatal mental health services and external stakeholders, you will seek to make a difference to the lives of parents and babies. Training, a structured supernumerary period, excellent team support and opportunities for future development are provided to enhance your skills and knowledge across the pregnancy continuum in all birth settings.

What You’ll Do
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Manage your own caseload of birthing people providing antenatal care.
- Be a part of a team caseload roster working on calls to provide labour care in all areas of maternity care including labour ward, low risk birth centres and homebirths.
- Be an autonomous practitioner managing your own workload and diary
- Work within a MDT frequently, attend safeguarding, Perinatal Mental Health and other multi-disciplinary team meetings
- Support those birthing people who require extra support in the form of individualised care and support plans.
- Provide enhanced postnatal care to families and newborns including parent education
- You will work within a small team that allows you to build a close rapport and good working relationship with colleagues.
- You will be working in a continuity model of care that strives to improve outcomes for birthing people and families from disadvantaged backgrounds and those from the Global Majority specific ethnicities with additional risk factors.
- You will build a variation of skills and build personal confidence in all areas of midwifery.
- Dedicated and passionate individuals wanting to provide the gold standard midwifery care.
- A midwife wanting to provide individualised, compassionate care to birthing people and their families throughout the perinatal period.
- A midwife with clearly defined experience looking after birthing people who are vulnerable or require additional support
- A midwife with great communication and interpersonal skills to lead their caseload, work as a team and liaise with other organisations and health professionals as necessary.
- An individual who is driven, innovative and committed to service improvement and embracing change.
- A midwife that demonstrates a commitment to personal and service development.
- This model of working requires you to have a driving licence and have access to a car as this role dictates a regular on call commitment.
