The Role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will have an exciting opportunity to make a tangible difference to the UK’s Defence and Security interests. You will be part of a large design community, working across multiple domains and a diverse set of projects, alongside our colleagues, you will have the opportunity to research, innovate, integrate, assure and deploy our products and services. It’s not unusual to find people at QinetiQ who have worked on everything from Submarines operating in the depths of our Oceans, to Spacecraft destined heading into outer Space.
Day-to-day, as a member of the Farnborough Design team, you will work both independently, and collaboratively with other designers, depending on the size and complexity of the project, this could be on-site or remotely across our UK and Global sites. You’ll be supported by a Design Team Lead, who will provide direction, and ensure we have a consistent approach to the design, delivery as well as necessary skills and behaviours.
Your Responsibilities Will Include

This role is 37 hours per week based at our Farnborough site. Travel to other QinetiQ and customer sites is expected.

Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Delivering Mechanical Design solutions and taking ownership of delivery, reporting progress to project leads.
- Explore and test the problem space thoroughly, before generating hardware solutions, and presenting these ideas at design reviews and group critiques.
- Oversight of the safe delivery for design related tasks
- Application of BS 8888 geometric product specification, geometric tolerance specification and engineering drawings in your day-to-day work
- Experience of collating and presenting safety and regulatory compliance evidence documentation. Including Hazard Identification, Safety Cases and Safety Management systems
- Ability to understand and interpret system requirements, communicating design trade-offs and able to influence stakeholder towards an optimal solution
- Experience of managing large model complexity, with rigorous control of configurations and interdependencies
- Design and documentation of parts and enclosures with integrated electrical and electronic sub-assemblies
- Demonstrates good knowledge of material types and properties, surface finishes applied, and sealing and fastener systems
- Previous experience with Solidworks, or similar CAD packages
