Are you a dedicated and supportive veterinary nurse who thrives on leading a team and building strong client relationships? Medivet Thorpe Bay, Shoebury Road, is seeking a Head Veterinary Nurse (HVN) to join us on a maternity cover contract, supporting our friendly and committed team in delivering outstanding patient care to a loyal and established client base. Ideally, you will have at least 2 years of UK experience, with leadership or clinical coaching experience desirable but not essential.
Located in the coastal town of Thorpe Bay in Southend-on-Sea, our practice is well rooted within the local community and enjoys strong client loyalty. The area offers the best of both worlds, with beautiful seaside views, green spaces, and a relaxed lifestyle, while still benefiting from excellent transport links into London. This makes it an ideal location for those seeking a balanced work-life experience in a supportive and welcoming environment.
Our caseload is varied and engaging, offering opportunities to develop your skills and take an active role in both clinical and managerial responsibilities. As HVN, you will play a key part in maintaining our high standards of care, supporting and motivating colleagues, and ensuring smooth day-to-day practice operations. You’ll be joining a collaborative team who take pride in creating a positive culture, where every contribution is valued.
This maternity cover role offers a good work-life balance, with a flexible 4/5-day week averaging around 40 hours, alongside participation in a shared weekend rota. It’s an excellent opportunity to step into a leadership role within a well-established and supportive local practice.

In This Role You Will
- Provide clinical leadership to the nursing team.
- Consistently deliver exceptional care to your clients.
- Support with surgeries and procedures, completing all pre and post procedure activity.
- Lead, manage and promote nurse led appointments and Schedule 3 surgeries.
- Deliver patient monitoring and care.
- Manage admissions and discharges as directed by the Veterinary team.
- Complete patient transfers to out of hours or enhanced care.
- Dispense and check medication.
- Deliver professional excellence, implementing and complying with all regulatory, practice and operational standards.
- Inspire your team, sharing new or evolving practice standards and changes to processes.
- Engage, coach and develop your team.
- Pro-actively support and share clinical best practice across practices and the wider Medivet community.
- RCVS registered Veterinary Nurse.
- Experience of delivering exceptional patient and client care.
- Able to confidently lead a clinical team.
- Experience of implementing a progressive clinical culture through nurse clinics and nurse consultations.
- Experienced in using coaching and influencing skills to get the best out of every colleague.
