Within Care and Rehabilitation Services, the philosophy of our prisons is to rehabilitate offenders and equip them to re-integrate into mainstream society on release. We seek to normalise prison conditions as far as possible to reflect life in the outside community. Our aim is to create an environment in which staff and prisoners feel safe and causes of prison stress are minimised. Central to our philosophy is the relationship between staff and prisoners. Our training and operational practices emphasise the need to treat prisoners with dignity and respect and G4S staff build positive and supportive relationships with the prisoners in their care.

HMP Rye Hill is a category 'B' training prison situated in the village of Willoughby, near Rugby in Warwickshire, holding approximately 664 sentenced male adults.

You will have a background/experience within the horticulture and or gardening industry, and would like to broaden your experience in working with a rewarding group within a unique environment. Our grounds are vast, and we will empower you to be creative and develop positive areas for both the staff and prisoners to enjoy.

Some of the key responsibilities are;

  • Ensure the establishment grounds are kept neat, clean and free of rubbish by conducting regular litter picking / sweeping.
  • Ensure regular maintenance of beds, lawns and central garden area.
  • Submit horticultural plans for summer and winter to the Facilities Group Team Leader.
  • Liaise with the AAU to ensure your profiled roll is maintained to agreed profile at all times contributing to the Establishments ‘Purposeful Activity’ KPT
  • Ensure all local and national policies relevant to Horticulture are implemented and adhered to at all times.
  • Work closely with other departments e.g. Learning & Skills, Resettlement, Offender Management and Interventions as required to ensure prisoners’ needs are met.
  • Ensure all Prison and Customer paperwork is completed accurately, neatly and by required deadlines, to include regime monitoring, prisoner pay, interruptions, delivery/collection notes etc.
  • Ensure Customer quality and production targets are met.
  • Develop and challenge prisoners working under your supervision to achieve targets set and instil the ‘work ethic’ to improve their employability upon release.
  • Support the delivery of any accredited training/qualification offered in your area and meet the standards and requirements of the awarding body.
  • Maintain individual learning plans for all students
  • Maintain the security of your area at all times reporting any concerns immediately to your line manager and the Security Department.
  • Be accountable for and manage all tools used in your area using correct procedures for tool cabinets, tally systems, tool allocation, and disposal and inventories etc following set procedures as per the Local Security Strategy.
  • Ensure the Security tool check sheet is completed after every work session AM and PM and keep records for audit purposes
  • Challenge anti-social behaviour and poor performance of prisoners allocated to your work party
  • Work closely with the Security Department to develop ‘Dynamic Security’
  • Record all training delivered on the F2055c inmate training record, in line with relevant SSOW, and published risk assessments.
  • Ensure all Health & Safety signage is displayed as required.
  • Ensure prisoners wear correct PPE as required and inspect regularly for wear and tear and damage. Replace as necessary.
  • Review and update the risk assessments, Safe Systems of work and COSHH assessments annually (once trained)
  • Impose the ‘No Smoking’ policy and challenge those prisoners abusing it.
  • Ensure Horticulture Centre is clean and tidy at all times keeping walkways and fire exits free from obstructions.
  • Ensure daily pre-use safety checks are carried out on all tools and equipment prior to use, and maintain records of these inspections

The successful candidate must have experience in the Horticulture Sector, and be educated to at least GCSE level or similar and hold a D32, D33 and D34 TDLB or Assessor Award A1 or be willing to work towards one.

Experience of working in a custodial environment and a Teaching qualification would be desirable but arent essential.
