What You'll Do
As an Engineering Team Leader based in Blackburn, you will take on a central role in maintaining the smooth operation of a busy food manufacturing facility. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve overseeing both planned preventative maintenance schedules and urgent repair tasks, always aiming to minimise downtime.
- Collaborate closely with Factory Managers and Production Managers to ensure machinery downtime is kept to an absolute minimum through proactive planning and swift response.
- Lead a small team of multi-disciplined engineers, fostering a collaborative environment where knowledge sharing and skill development are encouraged.
- Undertake planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on all equipment to prevent production disruption and maintain high operational standards.
- Action repairs efficiently while ensuring all measures taken are thoroughly recorded so recurrent faults can be identified and addressed promptly.
- Liaise with the Engineering Manager and Senior Engineer to guarantee the timely supply of appropriate parts for maintenance or repair activities.
- Champion health, safety, and environmental policies by promoting best practices across the site and leading by example in all H&S matters as delegated by management.
- Mentor and coach other engineers within your team to deliver exceptional service to production lines while nurturing their professional growth.
- Drive root cause analysis following breakdowns or faults, implementing effective countermeasures to prevent recurrence and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Contribute actively to building maintenance projects as directed by senior leadership, ensuring facilities remain safe, efficient, and compliant with regulations.
- Support the deployment and execution of preventative maintenance strategies for the site using CMMS systems.
To excel as an Engineering Team Leader in this setting, you will bring substantial hands-on experience gained from working within fast-paced FMCG environments—ideally those involving food production.
- Comprehensive electrical and mechanical knowledge specifically related to food processing machinery within an FMCG environment is essential for this role.
- Demonstrated experience in process control systems along with competence in building electrical control systems from switchgear through to software implementation is required.
- Completion of an engineering apprenticeship with associated qualifications such as BTEC ONC, HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering is mandatory.
- Ideally holds IEE qualification up to 18th edition Wiring Regulations or equivalent certification relevant to electrical safety standards.
- Proven track record in engineering roles focused on fault finding within fast-moving consumer goods environments is highly desirable.
- Thorough understanding of HACCP, COSHH, GMP principles as they apply within food manufacturing settings is expected.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills with the ability to nurture positive relationships across teams are vital for mentoring responsibilities.
- Experience with PLC fault finding as well as familiarity with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) is advantageous.
- Ability to deploy preventative maintenance strategies effectively while driving continuous improvement initiatives across engineering processes is important.
- A passion for quality assurance combined with practical knowledge of internal health & safety audits ensures compliance at all times.
