An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Engineering Team Leader to join a thriving FMCG food manufacturing environment in Blackburn. As an Engineering Team Leader, you will play a pivotal part in ensuring machinery runs smoothly, minimising downtime, and supporting a culture of continuous improvement. You will be empowered to mentor and coach your team, champion health and safety initiatives, and contribute to the ongoing success of a business that is experiencing sustainable growth.

What You'll Do

As an Engineering Team Leader based in Blackburn, you will take on a central role in maintaining the smooth operation of a busy food manufacturing facility. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve overseeing both planned preventative maintenance schedules and urgent repair tasks, always aiming to minimise downtime.

  • Collaborate closely with Factory Managers and Production Managers to ensure machinery downtime is kept to an absolute minimum through proactive planning and swift response.
  • Lead a small team of multi-disciplined engineers, fostering a collaborative environment where knowledge sharing and skill development are encouraged.
  • Undertake planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on all equipment to prevent production disruption and maintain high operational standards.
  • Action repairs efficiently while ensuring all measures taken are thoroughly recorded so recurrent faults can be identified and addressed promptly.
  • Liaise with the Engineering Manager and Senior Engineer to guarantee the timely supply of appropriate parts for maintenance or repair activities.
  • Champion health, safety, and environmental policies by promoting best practices across the site and leading by example in all H&S matters as delegated by management.
  • Mentor and coach other engineers within your team to deliver exceptional service to production lines while nurturing their professional growth.
  • Drive root cause analysis following breakdowns or faults, implementing effective countermeasures to prevent recurrence and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute actively to building maintenance projects as directed by senior leadership, ensuring facilities remain safe, efficient, and compliant with regulations.
  • Support the deployment and execution of preventative maintenance strategies for the site using CMMS systems.

What You Bring

To excel as an Engineering Team Leader in this setting, you will bring substantial hands-on experience gained from working within fast-paced FMCG environments—ideally those involving food production.

  • Comprehensive electrical and mechanical knowledge specifically related to food processing machinery within an FMCG environment is essential for this role.
  • Demonstrated experience in process control systems along with competence in building electrical control systems from switchgear through to software implementation is required.
  • Completion of an engineering apprenticeship with associated qualifications such as BTEC ONC, HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering is mandatory.
  • Ideally holds IEE qualification up to 18th edition Wiring Regulations or equivalent certification relevant to electrical safety standards.
  • Proven track record in engineering roles focused on fault finding within fast-moving consumer goods environments is highly desirable.
  • Thorough understanding of HACCP, COSHH, GMP principles as they apply within food manufacturing settings is expected.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills with the ability to nurture positive relationships across teams are vital for mentoring responsibilities.
  • Experience with PLC fault finding as well as familiarity with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) is advantageous.
  • Ability to deploy preventative maintenance strategies effectively while driving continuous improvement initiatives across engineering processes is important.
  • A passion for quality assurance combined with practical knowledge of internal health & safety audits ensures compliance at all times.
