Job Summary

Hamworthy Barracks in Poole is a high readiness Unit which provides support to Operations all around the world. Civil Servants within Hamworthy Barracks work directly alongside military personnel in several interesting and challenging job roles, such as personnel support, training, finance, governance and safety. The Motor Transport (MT) department requires a SZ3 driver - to operate vehicles ranging across CAT C+E, CAT C, CAT D and CAT B and undertake basic vehicle maintenance husbandry - in direct support to UK military Operations and training.

The successful candidate will have experience of working effectively in a team and essentially have a willingness to work overtime at short notice. They will be responsible for driving all vehicles they are authorised to drive in compliance with the Joint Service Publication (JSP) 800 and all civil laws and regulations appropriate to driving vehicles on public roads; completing all relevant documentation (as per JSP 800) in a timely manner and maintaining records relevant to drivers’ hours.The Job Holder will at times be required to work additional hours, for time of in lieu (TOIL) or paid overtime when authorised in order to meet the task. Basic computer skills are required to utilise the online Civil Service MyHR platform, for training and personal admin.

A full UK Driving Licence including: CAT C+E, CAT C, CAT B is essential alongside relevant driving currency. CAT D is desirable and can be undertaken in post.

In addition, a HAZMAT driving licence, first aid and forklift operator training are all desirable qualifications which can be undertaken in post if not already held. On the job familiarisation for all vehicles will be given, although previous knowledge and experience would be an advantage

This is a full-time post. However, requests for flexible, part-time working and job share will be considered, taking into account at all times the operational needs of the Department.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job Description

This is a permanent appointment as a Skill Zone 3 Driver within the Motor Transport (MT) department at Hamworthy Barracks. The primary role will be to carry out driving tasks in a range of different vehicle categories when directed by the MT Regulating Office, in direct support of Unit priorities, which carries a high level of responsibility. Drivers are also required to conduct basic additional administrative duties as required by the Motor Transport Officer (MTO), MT Warrant Officer (MTWO), MT Yard SNCO and the MT Reg NCO.

Additionally, the The Job Holder will be required to conduct basic driver maintenance and vehicle husbandry along with understanding the correct procedures for loading, unloading and slinging operations for military equipment in accordance with current regulations, safety laws and governance. Drivers are responsible for ensuring that all vehicles and loads are safe to proceed on the public highway and ensure that all professional documentation and qualifications remain current.

Strict compliance with MOD drivers’ hours in accordance with JSP 800 and compliance with all civilian and military driving governance and legislation are to be understood and drivers are to take care of the health and safety of all personnel and observe the best practice for the protection of the environment.

The Job Holder will be expected to make best use of all resources available at their disposal (including own time), looking for opportunities to reduce costs and make improvements for Defence, pursuing them energetically.

Person specification

In the execution of their day-to-day duties, the successful candidate will often be required to work independently, using their initiative to adapt to the changing and often challenging circumstances of the Unit’s output. A team player, they should be proactive in their support to the MT Team, willing to learn new skills to deliver on all tasks and with a flexible approach and willingness to work additional hours when necessary (TOIL and/or paid overtime will be awarded accordingly, when required).

As the role involves some independent working, the job holder will need to demonstrate good judgement when planning and completing multiple tasks efficiently; a problem solver who can think on their feet and take a considered approach to decision making. There will also be many occasions where the job holder will be required to work with others, both in and out of the organisation, therefore good communication skills are also an essential requirement.

Previous HGV experience is essential, as is a knowledge of load and load restraint although this can be taught on the job. Previous experience of working with military vehicles would be advantageous; any skills, knowledge and experience you believe pertinent to this vacancy should be expanded upon in your application.

A full UK driving licence Cat B, C, C+E is essential with Cat D, Forklift and Hazmat (ADR) desirable. If not already held then the successful candidate should be prepared to undertake Basic First Aid training once in post

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance.
