BrightLocal is a leading platform that empowers businesses to boost their online visibility through effective local SEO solutions. We are committed to delivering intuitive, high-quality, and cohesive design experiences to our users. Our Product Design team is pivotal in building and maintaining a design system that ensures consistency and scalability across our platform.

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Design System Designer to join our Design System team on a full-time basis. In this role, you will lead the design, evolution, and implementation of our design system, working with our Product Designers and Front End Engineers to create a cohesive and efficient design framework. Your work will directly contribute to enhancing the consistency and scalability of our platform, empowering both designers and engineers to build faster with a shared design language.

We have an ambitious but pragmatic approach to our Design System, with our own, unique Design Language that informs both our platform and website, following a utility/token based approach.

Job Location: Hybrid, Brighton, UK, 2 days in-office

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design System Leadership: Drive the creation, documentation, and maintenance of the design system, including component libraries, UI patterns, and design guidelines that align with our brand identity and product vision.
  • Collaboration: Partner with Brand and Product Designers to ensure the timely competition of our new Design System in Figma, and with Front End engineers in the coding of tokens, components and patterns.
  • Component Design: Design scalable and reusable UI components that prioritize accessibility, responsiveness, and user experience best practices.
  • Documentation & Guidelines: Develop comprehensive documentation that outlines component usage, design principles, and best practices, facilitating easy adoption and consistency.
  • Quality & Consistency Advocacy: Champion the consistency and quality of UI/UX across the platform, advocating for adherence to design system standards.
  • Feedback & Iteration: Collect feedback from design and engineering teams to iterate and improve upon the design system based on user and team insights.
  • Mentorship & Guidance: Offer support and guidance to team members on effectively contributing to, and adopting, BrightLocal’s design system.
  • Trend Awareness: Stay informed on industry trends and best practices, recommending new tools and methods to enhance the design system.

You’ll need to have:

  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in design systems.
  • Design Tools: Proficiency in Figma as the de facto design tool, with a strong understanding of its latest practices and functionalities for design systems, including Dev Mode.
  • Front-End Familiarity: A solid understanding of front-end technologies, especially React, to bridge the gap between design and implementation.
  • Accessibility Expertise: Strong knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG) and inclusive design practices.
  • Communication: Exceptional communication skills for articulating design decisions and collaborating with various stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and strategically about design challenges.
  • Portfolio: A robust portfolio showcasing your work on design systems, component design, and detailed documentation.

Nice-to-Have:

  • Collaboration Tools: Experience with the Chromatic platform for UI approval, UI testing at component-level and visual regression testing.
  • Industry Experience: Familiarity with the SEO industry and/or experience with SaaS platforms.
  • Theme Variations: Experience with implementing or considering light and dark theme variations in design systems
