Job Overview
Betsi Cadwaladar University Health Board (BCUHB) wishes to appoint to a part time General Paediatric Consultant post. It may be possible to increase to 10 sessions with the temporary addition of 2 sessions depending on service requirements and the successful post holders wishes.
The post is based at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Bodelwyddan, North Wales. Glan Clwyd Hospital serves an area covering Conwy, Denbighshire and parts of Flintshire. We are seeking to recruit a colleague with energy, ability and a positive approach to join our like-minded team, ideally with an interest that would complement those we already offer. The post is an 8-session post. There is a 1:9 on call commitment for general paediatrics. We are also running a 1:9 Consultant of the Week system as well as a 1:9 paediatric ED Week provision as part of a total of a 8-session contract. The 8-session contract is split into 70% direct clinical care sessions and 30% supporting professional activity sessions in line with the Welsh Consultant Contract. BCUHB is the largest Health Board in Wales and the fourth largest Health Board in the UK. The three district general hospitals in North Wales (Ysbyty Gwynedd, Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and Ysbyty Maelor Wrexham) are part of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, which delivers health care to a population of around 680,000. There is close collaboration and formal service links with colleagues in Bangor and Wrexham.
Main duties of the job
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) is the largest health organisation in Wales, with a budget of £1.7 billion and a workforce of over 19,000 staff. The Health Board provides primary, community, mental health and acute hospital services for the population of North Wales.
BCUHB provides a full range of primary, community, mental health, acute and specialist hospital services across 3 acute hospitals, 22 community hospitals and a network of over 90 health centres, clinics, community health team bases and mental health units. BCUHB also coordinates or provides the work of 113 GP practices and the NHS services provided by dentists, opticians and pharmacists across the region.
The Health Board is an integrated health system which strives to excellent compassionate care delivered in partnership with the public and other statutory and third sector organisations. BCUHB has a developed relationship with the universities in North Wales and with the University of Bangor is seeking medical school status and operates in a research-rich learning culture.

Main duties of the job
- The successful applicant will be expected to be actively involved in the clinical governance programme of the department, providing support to undergraduate and postgraduates as necessary.
- The Consultant Paediatrician will ensure maintenance of relevant skills through continuing professional development with an annual appraisal.
- The Consultant Paediatrician will provide clinical supervision for other paediatricians and clinical and educational supervision for specialist paediatric trainees.
- The Consultant Paediatrician will participate in the relevant children’s management meetings for the service

- MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
- Full GMC registration
- On the GMC’s Specialist Register or within six months of CCT at time of scheduled AAC (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
- Higher degree, e.g. MSc, MD, PhD in Paediatrics
Essential criteria
- Evidence of working effectively as a part of a multidisciplinary team
- Working as part of the management team
- Experience of liaison with other agencies eg child protection agencies
- Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching
- Evidence of initiating, progressing and completing audit
- Experience in paediatric emergency medicine or critical care
- Basic Life Support
- Advanced Paediatric Life Support (provider course)
- Level 3 Safeguarding
