Biomedical Engineer
We Make Change

Support a startup producing affordable prosthetics for those who need them
Ukuhamba
Ukuhamba is transforming prosthetic care in Africa by producing lightweight, affordable, and custom-made prosthetics through 3D printing technology. In South Africa, fewer than one in three people who need prosthetics can access them, leaving many amputees isolated, excluded, and unable to fully participate in society. Ukuhamba addresses this gap by creating cost-effective devices that restore independence, mobility, and dignity. By blending fashion into design, they also challenge stigma and empower users to proudly showcase their prosthetics, shifting perceptions of disability.
Beyond accessibility, Ukuhamba is committed to sustainability, using recycled plastic bottles in its production process to reduce environmental impact. Their approach not only improves individual lives but also drives broader social inclusion and equality, enabling people with disabilities to re-enter education, employment, and community life. By combining innovation, sustainability, and empathy, Ukuhamba demonstrates how technology can solve critical health, social, and environmental challenges at scale.
