RSPCA Sunderland, Hartlepool & South Tyneside

Date: 2 days ago
City: Chester-le-Street
Contract type: Full time
We’re seeking a Trustee with fundraising experience to support the growth and sustainability of our animal welfare charity. You’ll help strengthen income, strategy, and shape our expanding services including welfare and education, making a real difference for animals and the community

What difference will you make?

As a trustee with fundraising experience, you will play a key role in strengthening the financial sustainability of our branch, helping to ensure we can continue delivering essential animal welfare services while also investing in long-term prevention work.

Your input will directly support our ability to grow and diversify income beyond traditional sources, enabling us to respond more effectively to increasing demand for our services. This includes supporting the development of a clearer fundraising strategy, identifying new income opportunities, and helping the board make informed decisions about how best to allocate and grow resources.

This role will also help us build greater resilience across all areas of our work, from frontline animal welfare and pet support schemes through to our expanding education programme, which focuses on empathy, responsible pet ownership, and preventing cruelty and neglect before they occur.

In practical terms, your contribution will help ensure we can continue to provide support to animals and pet owners in crisis, while also investing in proactive initiatives that reduce future demand on our services. This balance between immediate response and long term prevention is central to our mission, and effective fundraising oversight is critical to achieving it.

Ultimately, your work as a trustee will help secure the future stability of the branch, enabling us to increase our impact for animals and the communities who care for them.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for a trustee with experience in fundraising, income generation, or strategic development within a charity or not-for-profit setting. Experience of developing or supporting fundraising plans, donor engagement, grant funding, or income diversification would be particularly valuable.

The ideal trustee will be confident contributing to strategic discussions around financial sustainability and able to help the board explore new and innovative ways to strengthen and grow income. An understanding of the challenges facing small to medium sized charities, particularly around balancing demand for services with limited resources, would be an advantage.

Alongside fundraising experience, we are looking for someone who can work collaboratively as part of a board team and contribute constructively to shared decision-making. Experience of governance, charity boards, or senior leadership in any sector would be beneficial, but is not essential.

We also welcome individuals who share a strong commitment to animal welfare and who understand the importance of both responding to immediate need and investing in preventative work through education, community engagement, and early intervention.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can bring fresh ideas, strategic thinking, and a practical approach to helping the organisation become more financially resilient and sustainable for the future.

What will you be doing?

As a trustee, you’ll play an important role in helping shape the future direction of our branch and ensuring we can continue delivering vital animal welfare services while developing new approaches to prevention and community support.

We are currently in an important stage of growth and development. Over recent years, we have strengthened our financial stability, improved operational processes, expanded our retail income, and introduced new education and outreach initiatives focused on empathy, responsible pet ownership, and preventing cruelty and neglect towards animals before they occur. Alongside this, we continue to respond to ongoing demand for frontline animal welfare support, meaning careful balance is required between immediate service delivery and long-term development.

Looking ahead, one of our key priorities is to build a more sustainable and diversified income base to support both existing services and future growth. While we have had success with grant funding and retail income, there is a recognised need to strengthen our fundraising strategy and improve long-term financial resilience.

For this reason, we are seeking a trustee with fundraising experience to join our board and help guide this area of work at a strategic level. You would play a key role in shaping our fundraising approach, supporting income generation planning, and helping the board identify new opportunities to support the branch’s ambitions.

Our board is made up of trustees with experience in governance, finance, operations, and HR, and we work closely with a committed senior management team. Trustees also have the opportunity to contribute to areas of development work as required, particularly as the branch continues to evolve and expand its education, retail, and community programmes.

This is an exciting time to join the organisation, with the opportunity to directly influence how we grow, strengthen sustainability, and increase our impact for animals and the people who care for them across our communities.
