Due to the retirement of our previous Medical Director, we have an exciting opportunity at Gateshead Health Foundation Trust, for a visible, energetic and positive medical leader to help us become the best place to work and experience care within the NHS.

As part of our ambition to be a clinically lead and management supported organisation, we are looking for a colleague who can inspire and lead the organisation. Our clinical leaders tell us that they want a strong voice, a trusted leader who will represent them and ensure that decision making fosters a culture of compassion, clinical quality and safety.

We are striving for a transparent and open culture where we encourage discussion and debate. The successful candidate must be prepared and able to listen to colleagues and seek input to decision making. At a time when the NHS is facing huge operational and financial challenges, we want to ensure that the difficult decisions we need to make are grounded in a safety culture, but maintain and ambitious and innovative outlook.

We are working hard to maximise our opportunities and bring additional benefits to patients and staff by forming the Great North HealthCare Alliance with neighbouring provider Trusts, specifically, Northumbria Foundation Trust, Newcastle Foundation Trust and North Cumbria Foundation Trust.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, and forming part of the Trusts Executive Team, the Medical Director will provide the vision and leadership for the Medical Workforce across the Trust

The Medical Director is a full Executive member of the Trust Board. All Directors share corporate responsibility for:

  • Setting the Trust’s strategic direction
  • Achievement of the Trust’s corporate objectives including compliance with CQC standards and the delivery of national targets and core
  • Delivering high quality and safe care to
  • Promoting a high performance
  • Promoting and living the ICORE values of the Trust and fostering a culture which enables and motivates staff to deliver outstanding care to our patients
  • Maintaining the financial strength of the

Working with relevant colleagues in both health and social care in Place, as well as colleagues across the wider Integrated Care System, the North East and North Cumbria Provider Collaborative (NENC) and the Great North Healthcare Alliance this will include clinical direction and leadership for new models of care delivery, process redesign and transformation to provide an integrated systems approach whilst also ensuring the organisation works as efficiently and effectively as possible, aligned to its core values.

Based in the North East of England we provide a range of hospital and community health services from our leading facilities, including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Blaydon urgent care centre and Bensham Hospital, all within Gateshead.

Established in 2005, we were one of the first foundation trusts in the country and since then have consistently achieved the highest levels of care for patients.

We now employ around 4,800 staff and currently provide 444 hospital beds across the Gateshead region.

Our values should be the ‘golden thread’ which runs through everything we do – they are the core of who we are. Our five values can easily be remembered by the simple acronym ICORE; Innovation, Care, Openness, Respect, Engagement.

We have a number of staff networks including the Global Ethnic Majority (GEM) network, D-Ability network, LGBTQ+ Network and the Women’s Network, to challenge us and help us to constantly improve. Our Armed Forces network is one of our emerging networks.

The health and wellbeing of our staff is one of our highest priorities, and we offer a range of support and initiatives as part of our ‘Balance’ programme balancegateshead.com to cater for our diverse workforce, so that your individual needs can be supported, allowing you a happy and healthy working experience with us.
