Role Summary


An Academic Clinical Lectureship in Haematology is available, and the post will be based in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences, University of Birmingham.


The successful candidate will remain in post until they reach CCT or for a period of four years (whichever is sooner), subject to satisfactory annual review. The applicant must have previous experience in the diagnosis and management of patients with haematological disorders and will receive continuing training in all aspects of haematology as part of the West Midlands Haematology specialty training rotation. Applicants must have a firm commitment to a career in academic haematology and completed, or nearing completion of a postgraduate qualification (MD or PhD). It is intended that their research will focus on laboratory and/or clinical aspects of haematology research (including clinical trials) which can be accommodated within the College.


Main Duties


Clinical


The job plan for the Clinical Lecturer will be set up to protect 50% of the lecturer’s time for academic purposes, including academic training, as well as providing maximal clinical experience and clinical learning opportunities aligned to the haematology specialist training curriculum. The post-holder will be expected to attend regional haematology training days and will carry a recognised specialty training number.


The exact timetable will depend on the subspecialty to which the CL is attached (the appointee would rotate through working in haematological oncology, laboratory haematology, haemostasis and thrombosis, paediatric haematology and haemoglobinopathies). An individual programme will be finalised according to the research and clinical training needs of the successful candidate as identified from regular reviews and formal assessments with both dedicated academic and educational supervisors.


Teaching


The appointee would receive plentiful opportunities to develop their teaching skills. Expected contributions to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes would include the MBChB, Biomedical Science BSc and MSc Clinical Oncology courses.


The post holder will be expected to play an active role in delivering bedside and small group teaching to clinical medical students. In addition, they will be required to undertake occasional lecturing and small group teaching sessions. There may be additional duties in undertaking F2 teaching and in the organisation of training for specialist trainees. Additional modules such as personal interest projects could be offered according to the appointee’s area of clinical research.


Research


The Clinical Lecturer will have a developing haematology research portfolio and area of interest that is compatible with an established research group within the University of Birmingham. The Clinical Lecturer will be offered research facilities and support to help establish her/his research in Birmingham. There will be strong encouragement in common with other research active staff in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences that the Clinical Lecturer should obtain funding for her/his research activities during the course of lectureship.


Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience



  • Full General Medical Council registration

  • Achieved CT2 core competencies.

  • Higher degree (MD/PhD) or near to completion in a relevant subject area

  • Must be at ST3 or above.

  • Must hold NTN/ST.

  • Membership of Royal College or equivalent.

  • Demonstration of understanding and commitment to an academic career.

  • Evidence of achievements in research - published in scientific journals.

  • Presented at international scientific meetings.

  • Knowledge of cellular based research and experience in clinical outcome research.

  • Experience in delivering bed side teaching, tutorials and lecturing to larger groups.

  • Understanding of the principles of Clinical Governance in research.

  • Data Analysis skills.

  • Ability to work in teams.

  • Demonstration of clinical and research leadership skills

  • Ability to communicate scientific findings to a lay audience and to engage with patient and public groups.
