As a Youth Worker in a SEMH school, you will provide vital support to students who face challenges related to their emotional and mental health, helping them to build resilience, develop key life skills, and engage in learning. You will work closely with teachers, support staff, and external agencies to ensure the needs of students are met and their well-being is supported in a safe and nurturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support students with SEMH needs in both group and one-to-one settings
- Promote positive behaviour and emotional development, using appropriate interventions and strategies
- Assist in the delivery of personal, social, and emotional development programs
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff and support teams to create and implement Individual Support Plans (ISPs) tailored to students' needs
- Help students build social skills, confidence, and self-esteem through structured activities
- Support the planning and delivery of enrichment activities and after-school programs
- Provide guidance, mentoring, and positive role modelling for students
- Work with external professionals such as counsellors, social workers, and psychologists to ensure holistic support for students
- Ensure a safe and respectful learning environment by managing student behaviour effectively
- Support the safeguarding and welfare of all students in line with school policies
- Experience working with young people, preferably within a school or SEMH setting
- A strong understanding of the challenges faced by students with SEMH needs
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students
- Patience, empathy, and a non-judgmental attitude
- A proactive approach to supporting students and creating positive outcomes
- Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate effectively with colleagues and external agencies
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
- A relevant qualification (e.g., Youth Work, Social Care, Psychology, or similar)
- Experience working with children with SEMH, autism, or other additional needs
- Level 2 Team Teach certification or a willingness to undertake relevant training
- Knowledge of behaviour management strategies and interventions
