Underwriting Team Leader

The opportunity

Avencia is partnered with a leading global insurer to support the hire of an Underwriting Team Leader for their Life Science, Technology & Professional Risks team. Based in Leeds city centre (3 days office / 2 days home), this role sits within the renewals department, leading a team focused on existing business across financial lines.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop a high-performing underwriting team
• Monitor team performance, workflow, and key targets (e.g. GWP, retention, cross-sell)
• Provide strong broker service, managing renewals and mid-term adjustments
• Identify opportunities for efficiency, growth, and service improvements
• Build relationships across brokers, underwriters, and internal teams
• Attend meetings to share insight on trends and market conditions

Skills & experience

• Proven people management experience within an underwriting environment
• Strong background in Life Science, Technology, or Commercial Lines
• Excellent communication, coaching, and organisational skills
• High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and broker engagement
• ACII or similar qualification preferred
