We are seeking a highly organised and experienced Transport Manager to oversee our transportation operations. The Transport Manager will be responsible for managing a fleet of vehicles, coordinating logistics, and ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of goods. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a deep understanding of transportation regulations.

Job Summary:

MJ Quinn Fleet department presently operate over 2000 vehicles. The job holder will complement our existing Fleet Management team and assist in our quest for continuous improvement in the management of our fleet.

As a Transport Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating all transportation activities within the organization. Your role will involve managing logistics, ensuring compliance with regulations, optimizing routes, and supervising a team of drivers or transportation staff. You will play a crucial role in maintaining efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness in transportation operations.

Duties:

The key responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to the following tasks:

  • Responsibility for the management of the Goods Vehicle Operators licence for Wales so a certain amount of travelling will be expected.
  • Control of the authorised operating centres assuring that only authorised operating centres are used, any conditions adhered to and that the authorised vehicle numbers are not exceeded
  • Ensure drivers hours are adhered to and adequate records are kept for the legally prescribed period
  • Ensure vehicles are maintained to the requirements of the Operators licence inc, PMI inspections, driver pre-use checks and defect rectification.
  • Carry out driver training where required to help ensure MJQ vehicles are operated in a safely and legally.
  • Carry out sub-contractor Fleet audits as and when required
  • Carry out accident and investigations as and when required
  • Carry out basic vehicle checks as and when required
  • Provide technical fleet advice and assist in vehicle ordering processes
  • Advise on vehicle numbers and assist in reducing those numbers where vehicles are not required
  • Responsibility for the MJQ fleet operation within a specific area , assisting the MJQ fleet office, this includes management of HGV’s, Vans and Plant/cable trailers
  • Act as MJQ Fleet department regional contact

To be effective in this role the Transport Manager will need to:

  • Maintain and build up a good working relationship with internal and external stakeholders including colleagues, customers, suppliers, and senior management teams.
  • Be able to work efficiently and effectively as part of a team.
  • Communicate effectively with all other departments.
  • Deliver quality service to the client ensuring that performance standards and contractual KPI’s and SLAs are met
  • Drive a “Safety First” and “Right First Time” culture across the field operations backed up through plans and engagement with suppliers.


Person Specification:

To be successful in this role the Transport Manager will:

  • Have strong planning, organisation, and monitoring abilities.
  • Be computer literate.
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Enjoy a challenge, have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate at all levels.
  • Have a strong orientation towards quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Can prioritise work, work well under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage business expectations.
  • Be adaptable and flexible in your approach to work.
  • Full UK Driving License which has been continuously held for 12 months or more, with no more than 6 points.
  • A legal right to work in the UK.
  • Must hold a national Certificate of professional Competence [CPC]
  • At least 2 years practical experience in a Transport Manager role
  • Detailed knowledge of Operators licence compliance including Driver’s hours and record keeping, maintenance of vehicles, overload prevention and Driver management.
  • Experienced in the management of vans and associated regulations.
  • Confident in carrying out Driver training.
  • Knowledge of Road Risk Management
  • Experience in the management of large van fleets.
  • Possess proficient mechanical knowledge.
