We’re looking for a skilled and motivated Trading Standards Enforcement Officer to join our team in a role that’s both rewarding and impactful. You will be working across a range of enforcement area including unfair trading, intellectual property, vapes and tobacco and product safety

Your responsibilities will involve support and undertaking investigations, whether complaint led, project work or intelligence led, taking enforcement action and preparing cases for consideration by legal services.

You'll be able to handle competing priorities, meet deadlines, and stay focused on achieving high standards. This role will give you the chance to engage with critical issues, stay informed on current Trading Standards legislation, and contribute to making a difference in your community.

About You

You will hold a relevant TSQF qualification such as the Trading Standards Practitioner Certificate, CSCATS or DCA and have a good understanding a range of Trading Standards legislation and the ability to understand and interpret legislation and relevant guidance. You will also demonstrate that you understand both local, regional and national priorities. You will be able to interact effectively with business and the public and be confident when exercising statutory powers to ensure that those businesses are compliant, including preparing documents for court action where necessary.

You will be a team player, working with other offices in Trading Standards, across the council and where necessary with other local authorities, participating in cross border project work and regional groups as required as the representative of Luton.

You’re experienced in balancing deadlines and meeting targets, and you know how to stay organised under pressure. A solid understanding of equality issues and their impact on different ethnic groups in the community is important, and proficiency in MS Office products is a must.

Because of the nature of this job, it will be necessary for the appropriate level of criminal record disclosure to be undertaken. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore applicants are required to declare all unspent cautions and convictions; and also any adult cautions (simple or conditional), and spent convictions that are not protected as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2020). A person’s criminal record will not in itself prevent a person from being appointed to this post. Applicants will not be refused posts because of offences which are not relevant to, and do not place them at or make them a risk in, the role for which they are applying. However in the event of the employment being taken up, any failure to disclose such offence, as detailed above, will result in dismissal or disciplinary action by the Authority.
