About The Role
At the London Borough of Hounslow, we have big ambitions. And our Housing and Tenancy Management Services are helping us realise these by transforming how we work for our residents. Right now, we’re looking for outcome-focused officers and performance-driven managers to fill our Tenancy Sustainment Officer role.
In this role, you’ll play a key role in reassuring and helping residents. It’s about so much more than providing great customer service: it’s about becoming a trusted partner. This means that you’ll take on incredibly rewarding and purposeful work.
You will be working as a frontline professional delivering a first class, modern and flexible service to some of the most vulnerable people in the Borough. You are required to be outcome focussed and creative in the way you achieve successful outcomes, seeking and implementing bespoke solutions to complex problems.
Are required to adopt a casework-based approach to tenancy sustainment, being proactive and assertive to engage with tenants to influence and empower them to remain safely and independently in their homes. You are highly motivated to support tenants, while effectively managing risks and challenging behaviour. You build up trusting relationships with tenants and professionals to work collaboratively to achieve individual outcomes for tenants while supporting the shared goals of the council.
You must be an experienced Tenancy Sustainment Officer or have the experience of a tenancy officer and passionate about making a difference while working in the team. You’ll need to find common ground, seek different perspectives, and solve problems with an open and adaptable nature.
About The Team You’ll Be Working In
The team aims to be preventative in approach, solutions focused and able to transcend organisational structures and traditional models of providing services to deliver the best possible outcomes for tenants who require additional support to maintain their tenancies.
We are community based to offer a responsive, proactive service to residents. We look to solve a majority of issues before they escalate, we opt to take a preventative approach. We also deal with high profile matters that require a reactive response to reduce risk to keep residents safe in their homes, including assisting with hospital discharges, abating cuckooing situations, reducing isolation and loneliness and managing mental health conditions to enable residents to sustain their tenancies.
We are a team who are focused on the needs of our tenants and gaining a better in-depth knowledge of tenants needs. We corporate resident engagement and build tenant engagement to ensure we best serve our residents.

Key Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively with your colleagues and partner agencies to ensure that tenants get the very best service and opportunities to live independently and safely in their homes.
- Work effectively to prevent tenancy breakdown and escalation of need, proactively supporting tenants to ensure they look after their homes, prevent the loss of their home and ensure rent is paid on time.
- Proactively engage with tenants, visiting them in community settings and in their homes, building up trusting, professional and caring relationships.
- Work in a person-centred way, carrying out holistic assessments to identify unmet needs, working proactively with other agencies to ensure those needs are met.
- Make timely referrals to internal departments and external agencies and proactively follow up to ensure referrals are acted on.
- Think creatively and decisively to implement bespoke solutions to meet complex needs and resolve complex problems.
- Co-ordinate work with others across the service to ensure cross cuttings issues are not considered in isolation, and solutions are joined up borough wide.
- Work effectively in a changeable environment to achieve targets and service objectives with competing priorities, while continuously improving our service offer to tenants to meet changing needs and integrate digital solutions.
- Keep up to date with key legislation, policies and procedures, and maintain a high awareness of issues that can cause legal, reputational and financial risks to the council, taking action to mitigate or prevent risks arising and ensuring value for money service delivery.
- Adopt safe working practices to comply with legislation, policies and procedures, while mitigating risks posed by challenging behaviour, identifying and recording accurate information to minimise risks to others.
- You have experience of multi-disciplinary working involving complex needs and diverse client groups and an understanding of the council’s role as a landlord and associated legislation and regulations relating to tenancy matters.
- You are a great communicator to engage effectively with a broad range of people to influence, negotiate and persuade.
- You act with integrity, take personal responsibility and handle stress effectively while maintaining high levels of motivation and enthusiasm to achieve successful outcomes for our tenants.
- You work proactively, flexibly and independently, being an expert problem solver and confident decision maker to seek out and implement bespoke solutions to complex issues.
- You are a high performing individual who works collaboratively with others to achieve targets and service objectives and make the team the very best it can be.
- You must have a full driving licence in the UK and you can travel independently around the Borough to visit tenants in their homes and meet other professionals in community settings.
- You must have previous Housing experience.
- You can evidence continual professional development.
A Basic DBS check is required.
