About The Role
We are seeking an experienced Laboratory Manager to oversee the daily operations of a large-scale research facility housing approximately 80 scientists. This role is critical to maintaining a safe, efficient, and fully functional laboratory environment while supporting strategic projects, including the transition to new state-of-the-art facilities in Central London.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Operations & Safety Lead and scientific teams to ensure compliance, manage resources, and drive operational excellence.

About The Role

This role is critical to maintaining a safe, efficient, and fully functional laboratory environment while supporting strategic projects, including the transition to new state-of-the-art facilities in Central London.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Operations & Safety Lead and scientific teams to ensure compliance, manage resources, and drive operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance, supply chain, and contractor coordination.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards across biology and chemistry workflows.
- Oversee core services such as gas systems, LEV, temperature monitoring, waste disposal, and stores.
- Lead planning and execution of lab refurbishments and support the design of new facilities.
- Act as the primary point of contact for lab-related issues and emergency response.
- Manage procurement, service contracts, and inventory of equipment and consumables.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment, service agreements, and vendor relationships.
- Onboard and train staff, visitors, and contractors on lab protocols and safety procedures.
- Collaborate with scientists and technical leads to resolve operational challenges.
- Proven experience managing large laboratory teams (ideally 80–120 staff) within pharma or biotech environments.
- Strong background in both biology and chemistry sample handling.
- Hands-on scientific experience, having progressed from bench work to leadership roles.
- Expertise in small molecule research preferred.
- Demonstrated stability and consistency in previous roles.
- Experience in relocating or setting up laboratory facilities highly desirable (candidates with this experience may be considered with team sizes of 50+).
- A Level or equivalent education; further scientific qualifications advantageous.
- NEBOSH / IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent certification.
- In-depth knowledge of laboratory safety, compliance, and operational procedures.
- Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and lab management systems.
- Ability to lead lab expansions and minimize disruption during maintenance.
