About Ofcom

As the UK’s communications regulator, we’re delivering vital work that helps keep the UK connected and shapes the future of how we’ll stay connected with each other.

Our work covers everything from phones and broadband, through to TV, radio, the postal service, and wireless devices. We’re also taking on the challenge of making the online world a safer place. And we need people of all backgrounds, skill sets, and experiences to help us achieve our goal of making communications work for everyone.

About the team you’ll be part of

The Audience Analysis team is a small and responsive team with access to the latest UK audience data. We provide the rest of Ofcom with data and insight about audience media and online habits to help policy development. We also produce reports for internal and external consumption.

The purpose and scope of the role

Ofcom's mission is making communications work for everyone and part of that is our role in sustaining Public Service Media as well as regulating the way in which broadcast and other stakeholders produce their output. Audience data and insights sit at the heart of making good policy on broadcast media as well as understanding latest trends in viewing and online consumption.

This is a part-time team role and you would work 21 hours per week, which is most likely spread over three days. We are open to discussion on which days of the week you would usually work.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Providing data and insight into key publications like Media Nations.
  • Work with policy colleagues enabling them to understand audience trends and helping them to interpret them for policy making.
  • Work with a range of colleagues across the organisation on TV and media, for example economists, technology team and legal colleagues.
  • Work closely with other members of the Audience Analysis team on methodology to develop best practice.
  • Take responsibility for some supplier relationships, negotiating annual prices and working with Ofcom financial colleagues to procure services.
  • Help to coach some more junior colleagues e.g. graduates, apprentices, or associates so that they can learn new skills whilst they assist you on projects.
  • Attend external events from time to time, building external relationships in a professional capacity where you will be a representative of Ofcom audience analysis.

The skills, knowledge and experience you’ll need for success

  • To have had experience with Barb TV data, running audience reach data and other metrics describing viewing behaviour.
  • To be agile when explaining data in a non-technical way to colleagues who are not analysts.
  • To be aware of and possibly used other audience measurement platforms for example Touchpoints, Ipsos Iris, RAJAR, Barb establishment survey or market research consumer data.
  • To have experience in drafting documents and /or summarising insights or communicating findings to colleagues using any evidence base.
  • Harmonising Work: You must be comfortable working as part of a small and dynamic team. This means that collaboration and communication with colleagues is as important as the analytical skills that you will use in the job.
  • Owning Accountabilities: You must take responsibility for your actions, decisions, and their outcomes. This includes showing up reliably and committing to getting the job done.
  • Forming Relationships: You must be able to build and nurture positive relationships with people inside and outside the organisation.

Ofcom has a clear mission: to make communications work for everyone. To be able to deliver on this, we want our organisation to reflect the diversity of background, experience, upbringing and thought that exists across the UK. We aim to recruit from the widest pool of candidates possible – no matter your social background, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender or disability.

Where positions are listed as full-time, we remain open to reduced hours, part-time arrangements, job shares, and other flexible working options. From day one, we champion flexible work arrangements to accommodate individual needs.

We also warmly welcome applicants who are returning to the workforce after a break – for whatever reason. If you have taken time away and are ready to rejoin, we look forward to reviewing your application.

Our recruitment processes prioritise accessibility and inclusivity. If you need information in an alternative format or have specific preferences, please contact our recruitment team at [email protected] or call 0330 912 1378.

As a Disability Confident employer, we offer interviews to disabled applicants who meet essential criteria for advertised roles. Learn more about this scheme here. https://careers.ofcom.org.uk/careers/how-we-hire/
