The Role

We’re looking for a Senior Technical Specialist to join the Engineering & Safety scrum team within our Asset Management value stream, responsible for the full lifecycle of real-time operational data platforms, including Aveva PI (and it’s consumer interfaces into Beran, GPM, Cyclewatch, EPM and SmartSignal) safety systems including Opralog and Condition Based Monitoring systems including SmartSignal, Beran suite and Beamex suite. These support engineering, safety, and performance optimisation across SSE Thermal’s generation, private network and storage assets.

You’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring that production and condition-based data is securely and centrally stored within the Common Data Platform (CDP), enabling integration with other systems such as the digital twin and empowering data-driven decisions to achieve prescriptive maintenance and maximise uptime.

You Will

As Senior Technical Specialist, you’ll ensure the resilience, optimisation, and secure operation of our Real-Time Data and Condition Based Monitoring Systems. You’ll be accountable for the full lifecycle of operational data platforms, ensuring their resilience, optimisation, and secure operation across SSE Thermal’s generation, private network and storage assets.

  • Manage system development, security and operations of real-time data platforms, safety systems and condition based monitoring systems ensuring alignment with business outcomes and product roadmaps, while actively identifying opportunities to leverage existing system functionality to deliver business value and automate manual processes.
  • Technically own the integration and secure operation of these systems, proactively resolving issues and driving enhancements that support prescriptive maintenance and uptime optimisation.
  • Lead the identification and implementation of system improvements in collaboration with stakeholders, analysts, and vendors as well as perform day to day maintenance activities.
  • Ensure documentation, knowledge artefacts, and change records are kept current to support operational continuity and auditability.
  • Contribute to security patching, vulnerability management, and service continuity planning in line with SSE IT governance.

You Have

  • Proven expertise in Aveva PI and related platforms (AF, Vision, DataLink), with hands-on experience in configuration, integration, and lifecycle support is essential. Experience with complementary platforms such as Beran suite, Beamex suite EPM, GPM, Cyclewatch, SmartSignal, and their integration into centralised data environments is desirable.
  • Experience in developing and operating interfaces to control systems, with a strong understanding of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, OPC (DA/UA), and other relevant standards.
  • Strong working knowledge of supporting technologies such as Azure, SQL Server, and hybrid cloud integrations.
  • Comfortable leading technical incident/problem resolution, root cause analysis, and system performance tuning.
  • Excellent communicator with the ability to translate complex issues for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
