Job Summary

Are you looking for a change that is stimulating and rewarding. The Nuclear Department within Navy Command, has a key role in providing education and training ranging from introductory to postgraduate level to Service and MOD Civilian personnel, in support of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme as well as bespoke courses for the wider nuclear industry.

Our multidisciplinary team consists of specialists in materials, physics, chemistry thermal hydraulics and nuclear safety related to nuclear power applications.

This post is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job Description

You will play a key role in educating and training personnel involved in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program in Nuclear Safety Methods.

Person specification

Deliver lectures, tutorials and research project design up to Level 7 (Master's Level). Design, develop, deliver and assess courses in:

  • The technical content of a modern safety case, majoring on the areas of hazard analysis, quantitative risk assessment, modelling techniques for probabilistic and deterministic safety justifications
  • Nuclear regulation and nuclear security regulation for Defence Nuclear Programmes (DNP)
  • Fault and Event Tree analysis, and engineering reliability and availability methods and tools
  • Probabilistic safety analysis, deterministic safety methods and substantiation
  • Organisational structures for nuclear safety regulation in the UK civil nuclear industry and the Defence Nuclear Programmes
  • Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plant safety management systems and the applicable laws the influence these systems and behaviours
  • Principles of hazard management, compliance, governance and culture in a nuclear safety context.
  • Describe and model severe reactor accidents including performing dose estimates from activity release

You need to be able to deliver in one of the following areas:

  • Nuclear Decommissioning
  • Criticality Safety
  • Nuclear Systems
  • Radiation Protection

Qualifications

A postgraduate (Level 7) in a STEM subject. Proof of qualification will be required at interview.

The faculty strongly supports continuing professional development and therefore upon taking up the position, you will have the opportunity to undertake a range of courses, attend conferences and build collaborations with industry and academia. If you have not already acquired professional registration, then you will also be supported in working towards Chartered status with a relevant scientific or engineering professional body. It is anticipated that any research undertaken which is not security classified may be suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals or at conferences.

The department is in HMS Sultan, Gosport, Hampshire which is the primary engineering training establishment for the Royal Navy. HMS Sultan's on-site facilities include secure parking, gymnasium, Wardroom membership and an onsite shop. Stokes Bay beach is close by and Gosport is a short ferry ride to Portsmouth, which offers excellent facilities such as access to travel networks, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays outlet shopping.

This post is on the MOD Civilian Nuclear Post Control List (PCL) and may attract the Nuclear Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA). This is a discretionary allowance. The post being listed on the PCL does not mean that the post holder will have an automatic entitlement to receive the RRA. The NSQEP RRA is not a contractual allowance and can be amended or withdrawn without notice in line with MOD Main and Submarine Delivery Agency policy.
