Senior Environmental Health Practitioner

About The Role

Our Environmental Health team aim to make a lasting impact on the quality of our natural and built environment. We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join the service as our Senior Environmental Health Practitioner for pollution and public health.

Providing a specialism for noise and acoustics, you will play an important role in delivering and overseeing our statutory and non-statutory functions related to environmental noise protection and pollution. This includes managing complex investigations, conducting acoustic assessments, critically analysing noise surveys, and taking enforcement action where necessary.

You will also undertake noise monitoring from time to time, to ensure we meet our statutory obligations. This role involves undertaking pollution investigations and enforcement. Your responsibilities will extend to the use of sound level recording equipment, calibration checks and maintaining accurate noise database systems. You will be expected to analyse noise data and use proprietary software including our Geographical Information System. Full training will be provided as necessary.

You will feed back to the team on development control issues, community complaints relating to transport, construction, and licensing alongside noise from commercial activities.

With an international airport within our borough's boundaries, and associated pressures of commercial and residential development, this role presents unique and complex challenges that demand a professional approach and an analytical acumen. Effective negotiation and communication skills are pre-requisites for any candidate applying for this position.

You will work closely with colleagues within the Planning service to provide consultation responses to ensure that pollution and public health mitigations can be put in place for developments within the borough.

The Environmental Protection team does not work in isolation from other sections or departments, so other aspects of pollution experience would be welcomed. This represents a unique training opportunity to enhance your understanding of acoustics, thermal comfort and sustainability issues through the assessment of architectural plans and the development control process.

The primary objective is to adeptly navigate and address the multifaceted public health impacts stemming from noise, with our Environmental Health team placing paramount emphasis on the well-being of our residents.

You will also be required to support the Port Health function of the service and be part of the rotation of staff supporting delivery of our imported food function. Full training will be provided.

We are looking for someone with the following qualifications and skills:

• previous experience in environmental health and pollution services
• BSc or MSc degree in Environmental Health
• Member of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health
• Institute of Acoustics (IOA) Diploma or equivalent postgraduate qualification (we will consider applicants who hold this qualification alone, for candidates that can demonstrate the necessary technical acumen as full training will be provided on the regulatory aspects)
• excellent written and verbal communication skills

Additional information

We can offer a relocation package to those looking to relocate to the Crawley area (who currently live more than 25 miles outside of Crawley)

Essential user car allowance (subject to review).

A full and current UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is a requirement of the role.

A Gatwick airside pass is required for this role. Therefore, satisfactory clearance of a Basic Disclosure and Barring (DBS) check is a condition of employment.

Participation in the Port Health rota for imported goods is a requirement of the role. Please see job description for further details. Special responsibility allowance will be payable for this rota.
