Job Description

Senior Development Engineer at Cosworth, working as part of small, dynamic team within the Propulsion Engineering department, contributing to a range of exciting and high profile powertrain projects. Extensive experience of dynamometer engine test and development is required, covering all aspects of mechanical and performance development, including research into combustion with net zero fuels.

The Role

  • To deliver engineering objectives set by the Engineering Director, Chief Engineer, Principal Engineer and/or specific engineering Project Leader, working either individually or as part of a project team.
  • To manage own workload and planning activities.
  • To supervise and train junior colleagues.
  • To plan, organise and deliver test activities on engine dynamometer or sub system rig as outlined in the project’s Design Verification and Validation Plan (DVP).
  • Have a thorough understanding of engine control system theory and be capable of development of ECU and control system calibrations
  • Support and lead engine or subsystem build technicians.
  • Support and lead instrumentation and data logging installations.
  • To author and/or follow test procedures.
  • To keep accurate records of all build and test activities undertaken.
  • Analyse and present data from both build and test activity and to present this both within Cosworth and externally to customers and suppliers.
  • Report, investigate and propose root cause, containment and solutions to issues encountered during build & test.
  • Provide regular feedback, reports and meeting attendance as necessary to keep department & project management fully informed of project status.
  • Consider the health and safety, environmental and energy impact of all activities.
  • Support the Company’s compliance with the Data Protection Act 2018, following policy and best practice.

Candidate Profile

  • Demonstrable experience as a test or development engineer within the Motorsport, Aeronautical or Automotive industry.
  • Good class degree (2.1 or above) in a relevant engineering subject or equivalent qualification.
  • Able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the operating principles of the internal combustion engine and its cooling, lubrication, air handling and control systems.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of one other system in a vehicle driveline advantageous i.e. hybrid.
  • Experienced with the use, data interpretation fault finding and mapping of an electronic control unit.
  • Familiar with at least one data logging package and to be able to programme the logger and present data.
  • Able to interpret technical information to generate a logical series of actions based on the implementation of sound engineering practice.
  • Able to show an understanding of the commercial and manufacturing implications of engineering actions.
  • Able to communicate effectively on a technical level with other engineers and managers, both within and external to Cosworth. This includes the compilation of written reports, oral communications and presentations.
  • Have a good understanding of commonly used office software packages, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Able to organise own workload in an effective manner.
  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to improving skills through relevant training and experience.
  • Have a passion for engineering and problem solving.
