Qualifications and Experience:
The role will primarily be based in the SubSea Craft office in Portsmouth, UK, with the requirement to travel to our Portland facility in Dorset during trials.
The position may involve work in a manufacturing environment and at sea during trials, which may present physical challenges and require adherence to safety protocols.
Note: Due to the nature of work undertaken at SubSea Craft, the selected candidate must be capable of meeting the security requirements of the position, which would include as a minimum Existing right to live and work in the UK, Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), with Security Check likely for specific projects.*

Responsibilities Will Include
Composite Fabrication
- Comprehensive Vessel Construction: Own the full build process from interpreting engineering drawings and preparing moulds to assembling hulls, decks, and other structural components.
- Advanced Composite Techniques: Apply detailed hand layup, vacuum bagging, resin infusion, and resin transfer methods to fabricate and repair high-quality composite parts.
- Structural Integration: Accurately align and install composite subassemblies—such as bulkheads, stringers, and other reinforcements—ensuring overall vessel integrity.
- Marine Systems & Fit-Out: Incorporate mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and safety systems into composite structures, adhering to maritime standards and best practices.
- Precision Finishing: Perform finishing work, including fairing, sanding, and polishing, so each component and assembled section meets exacting aesthetic and performance specifications.
- Quality Control & Compliance: Conduct inspections throughout the build process, ensuring compliance with relevant marine regulations and internal quality standards.
- Collaboration & Timelines: Work closely with design, engineering, and production teams. Follow project plans diligently to achieve milestones and deliver a finished vessel on schedule.
- Follow work instructions and project timelines diligently to ensure timely completion of tasks.
- Utilise tablet-based work management systems to access work instructions, record progress, and complete documentation accurately.
- Provide line management and support to Composite Technicians, ensuring their work aligns with project requirements and timelines.
- Work closely with all team members in a collaborative environment to achieve project goals.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues to coordinate tasks, share insights, and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
- Report directly to the Lead Boat Builder, ensuring alignment with overall project objectives and team performance.
- Maintain high standards of workmanship in all aspects of composite fabrication.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols, quality control measures, and industry standards throughout the fabrication process.
- Think innovatively to propose and implement improvements in fabrication techniques, processes, and tooling.
- Contribute ideas to enhance efficiency, quality, and productivity in the workshop.
- Take pride in the workshop environment and maintain high levels of cleanliness and organization.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to producing high-quality composite components that reflect positively on the team and the organization.
- This Senior Boat Builder role requires a dedicated individual who can work effectively under pressure, follow instructions meticulously, and communicate clearly within a close-knit team environment. The ability to innovate, maintain high standards of workmanship, and take pride in one's work and workplace are essential for achieving outstanding results in composite fabrication projects.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Able to work with a deep understanding of composite construction methods including infusion, RTM and a high proficiency in hand lay-up of small components and secondary bonding.
- Experience of component finishing and finish coatings.
- Must be proficient in the use of hand tools and confident to fit composite structures and components to a high standard.
- Able to work from drawings and work instructions, complete documentation when required.
- Computer literate with basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- City & Guilds or HND qualification in Boat Building or Marine Engineering, or extended experience in composite yacht construction.
- Able to fault find and fix mechanical, hydraulic and/or electrical systems.
- Able to use Auto-CAD, rhino and other 3D software.
