Rural Hospital Doctor, Galloway Community Hospital

Salary - £111,362 to £127,648

NHS Dumfries & Galloway are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative doctor to join our team in providing in-patient and ED (Emergency Department) cover in the Galloway Community Hospital in Stranraer. This post is an excellent opportunity to develop acute care skills, supported by a motivated and highly-skilled multi-disciplinary team, based in a modern and purpose-built hospital in one of the most beautiful areas in Scotland.

The hospital has a 20 bedded acute ward, a 24 bedded rehabilitation ward with 2 additional designated palliatives beds. We have a busy Emergency Department, seeing about 15,000 cases per year. Support in this role is provided by Consultants from Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary including; Physicians, Surgeons, Geriatricians and Emergency Department specialists, and from Anaesthetists on call locally 24/7. We also have Emergency Nurse Practitioners who work in collaboration in the ED and ANPs who work between both the Medical and Rehab units.

ALS, ATLS and APLS are all required to be kept up to date and many of the courses are available locally. We envisage in the future that you will regularly rotate through the consultant-led units in DGRI, particularly Anaesthetics, A&E and Acute Medicine. As part of the role you will rotate between working in the ED, the Garrick Ward (Acute Medical) and Dalrymple Ward (Rehab and Palliative).

The hospital also has nurse-led units for renal dialysis and chemotherapy. We also have a Day Surgery Unit with visiting specialities utilising the unit Monday Friday. This post would suit a candidate with MRCGP or equivalent who was looking to widen their experience and spend more time in acute care. The post is full time, 44 hours per week, but part time and job share options will be considered.

The region offers beautiful countryside, from rugged cliffs and sandy beaches to forests, hills and rolling plains. There is a wide range of activities on offer, with water sports, fishing, bird watching, golf, mountain-biking or cycling along the network of rural roads and much more. House prices are low, schools are good and you are within 2 hours of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Lake District and Newcastle.

Applicants are required to be on the GMC Register with a Licence to Practice and will hold specialist registration or be within 6 months of obtaining the certificate in either Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics or General Practice.

Arrangements to visit the hospital can be made through Jason Jordan, Assistant General Manager [email protected]
