Role Description

We are seeking a high-calibre Senior Project Director to join our UK Highways and Transportation business unit, part of a global engineering consultancy renowned for delivering transformative infrastructure projects. This technical leadership role is pivotal in delivering some of the most complex and high-value (£500m+) multi-disciplinary highways projects in the UK and internationally.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership: Provide clear and decisive leadership across a portfolio of projects, setting the vision, direction, and standards for technical delivery, commercial success, and client satisfaction. Inspire teams to achieve excellence and deliver results.

Portfolio Management: Take full responsibility for directing and successfully delivering a portfolio of infrastructure projects, ensuring consistency in execution, financial performance, and alignment with client expectations.

Team Leadership: Manage and motivate multidisciplinary teams, fostering collaboration, accountability, and a shared commitment to delivering complex projects. Lead by example, creating a culture of high performance.

Client Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and stakeholders, acting as a trusted advisor and ensuring their needs and expectations are met or exceeded.

Solution Delivery: Oversee teams, both locally and internationally, to deliver integrated, commercially viable solutions. Ensure all teams work cohesively and efficiently to meet project goals.

Governance and Oversight: Work closely with Project Managers to ensure robust project governance, including scope, budgets, schedules, risks, and quality management. Take ultimate accountability for project outcomes.

Business Growth: Actively contribute to the growth of the business by identifying new opportunities, expanding client relationships, and mentoring emerging leaders within the team.

Requirements

Leadership Expertise: Proven ability to lead and inspire teams across multiple projects or a portfolio, with a focus on clear communication, collaboration, and accountability. Demonstrated success in driving high-performing teams in challenging environments.

Portfolio Management: Significant experience managing and delivering a portfolio of large and complex infrastructure or highway projects, ideally within a design and build context.

Team Management: Extensive experience leading multidisciplinary teams, including remote or offshore delivery partners, with a focus on creating a cohesive and motivated team environment.

Client-Focused Leadership: Strong ability to build trust and rapport with clients, navigate complex stakeholder environments, and lead client engagements with a commercial mindset.

Technical and Commercial Expertise: Deep understanding of project governance, risk management, contracts (NEC/JCT), and financial performance, ensuring sound decision-making.

Education and Accreditation: Relevant degree (e.g., Civil Engineering) and professional accreditation (e.g., MIHT, ICE, or similar).

Global Experience: Experience working on international highway/infrastructure projects and within global consultancy or contractor environments, with an ability to lead teams across different cultural and geographic contexts.
