Programme Manager - Depots and Stabling

Northern

Date: 2 days ago
City: York
Contract type: Full time
TRU Depots and Stabling Programme Manager

Location: York/Leeds

Department: Infrastructure Change

Salary: £59,000 – £64,000

Introduction

Keeping the North moving takes careful planning, precise coordination and a real understanding of how our railway fits together. That’s where our Infrastructure Change team comes in. They lead the projects that shape the future of our depots and stabling facilities – ensuring our trains have the facilities they need to keep running safely and reliably every day. As our TRU Depots and Stabling Programme Manager, you’ll take the lead on projects linked to the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) – one of the most significant rail infrastructure programmes in the UK. You’ll bring people, plans and priorities together to make sure our depot and stabling projects not only keep services moving during TRU works, but also deliver long-term improvements for the future. This is a role that sits right at the heart of Northern’s transformation – balancing strategic planning, interface management, delivery, and working closely with key stakeholders across Network Rail, contractors and internal teams.

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll manage a portfolio of depot and stabling infrastructure projects from development through to delivery – to ensure milestones happen on time, within budget and to the highest standards. Your work will include:

  • Overseeing projects at key locations such as Heaton and Hull, delivering infrastructure enhancements and long-term operational benefits.
  • Coordinating with key programmes to manage interdependencies, access planning and mitigations that keep our operations on track.
  • Acting as the main point of contact for TRU depot and stabling works, representing Northern’s strategic interests at industry forums and alliance meetings.
  • Ensure team accountability for scope, budget and delivery – taking proactive action when programmes or costs are at risk.
  • Managing risks, reporting and governance through robust project controls and clear communication across teams.
  • Supporting and mentoring others within the Infrastructure Change team to build capability and consistency across our delivery portfolio.

No two days will look the same – you’ll balance big-picture programme management with the detail that keeps complex infrastructure projects running smoothly.

About You

You’ll bring strong experience in programme or project management within a rail, infrastructure and ideally depots environment – with a proven ability to coordinate complex projects across multiple stakeholders. Commercially astute, collaborative and calm under pressure, you’ll be comfortable leading teams, influencing senior stakeholders and finding practical solutions in fast-moving situations.

A few things you’ll bring:

  • Ideally project or Programme Management qualifications (Prince2 Practitioner or equivalent)
  • A solid understanding of Health, Safety and Environmental legislation and CDM Regulations
  • Experience working within a rail operating or depot environment
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • A proactive, organised and adaptable approach – you’ll make things happen even when challenges arise

Degree-level qualifications or substantial relevant experience would be ideal, but what matters most is your ability to lead with confidence and deliver with precision.

We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North – connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment. Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe – and this year, we’re celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board. At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B – we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview. We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment. No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
