Plasma Diagnostics Lead
Proxima Fusion
Date: 9 hours ago
City: Oxford
Contract type: Full time

Who We Are
At Proxima Fusion, we're driven by a bold mission – to redefine the future of sustainable energy. Our unique concept, built upon the groundbreaking W7-X stellarator and the latest advances in technology, paves the way for commercially viable fusion power plants.
What’s more, our work in stellarator optimization, powered by cutting-edge computation and machine learning, is propelling us into uncharted territories of fusion technology. New higher performance design points are unlocked by high temperature superconducting magnets.
To fully grasp this huge opportunity, we’re building a team of extremely dedicated and passionate people who come together driving something extraordinary, radically transforming technology in the world.
WHY JOIN PROXIMA FUSION
Proxima Fusion is advancing the future of energy by harnessing the power of fusion. Our primary mission is to build Alpha, a large-scale technology demonstrator: a stellarator designed to achieve scientific break-even by 2031. Reaching this milestone will mark a decisive step toward making fusion a cornerstone of a sustainable energy system.
We are seeking a Plasma Diagnostics and Instrumentation Lead to join our team. In this pivotal role, you will initiate and guide the design of advanced plasma diagnostics essential for monitoring, controlling, and understanding plasma behavior within Alpha. Working closely with the design team, you will shape early adaptations that ensure Alpha is equipped with a diagnostic system robust enough to serve as the foundation for our future fleet of fusion power plants.
The successful candidate will play a critical role in building the diagnostic capabilities that drive both our scientific discoveries and engineering progress.

What You Will Do
- Have full responsibility for the initial effort of the Alpha plasma diagnostics suite design, and ideally bring it from conceptual design to full commissioning together with a team by 2031.
- Build a team of plasma diagnostic engineers.
- Conceptualize diagnostic design solutions, in sketches and CAD.
- Incorporate considerations about the associated data analysis into the diagnostics design from the start of the project.
- Work in close collaboration with the integrated stellarator design team and the data acquisition team to determine the right overall design trade-offs.
- In collaboration with academic institutions, develop new or modify existing diagnostics as necessitated by the program.
- Strong experience in hands-on operation (including major upgrades) or development of at least 3 different prominent plasma diagnostics for magnetic fusion devices.
- Have successfully commissioned at least one plasma diagnostic system on a magnetic confinement device.
- Have comprehensive knowledge of a wide variety of plasma diagnostics, including the ability to evaluate their respective advantages and disadvantages. Knowledge or ideally experience of plasma diagnostics design for neutron irradiated environments is desired.
- Are amenable to initially undertaking a wide scope of responsibilities, encompassing the conceptualization of non-plasma diagnostics systems, such as instrumentation systems for other stellarator systems.
- Are proficient in common CAD programs, preferably CATIA.
- Are confident in programming with Python or have shown code affinity in other ways.
- Recruiter Interview (30-60 min)
- Technical Screening (30 min)
- Technical Panel (3x60 min)
- CEO call (30 min)
