Job Description

The Role/Essential Responsibilities

As a Systems Engineer in the Power Systems and Software Department, you would be helping manage the nascent requirements and interfaces, creating initial design baselines to feed the software, hardware and test teams. There must be effective management of changes coming from the customer, including supporting project technical leadership. You would be joining a dynamic environment that enables every engineer to reach their potential as the team switches from design definition to design verification and to final delivery.

This provides the prospects to broaden your skills by taking active responsibilities on the Verification and Integration phases. The main focus of the current project is on the development of a Lab environment suitable for troubleshooting and testing a business jet electrical power distribution system. The Department actively encourages cross-functional skills. You will use your Systems Engineering knowledge to help de-bug software via systems test results analysis, design in modifications into the systems lab environment and perform hands-on testing to expand on your knowledge of test equipment and processes for working safely in high power environments.

By joining GE Aviation at Cheltenham, ultimately, as part of a healthy Power department, you will have the opportunity to move projects and roles to provide variety and grow your responsibility as your experience increases.

Qualifications / Requirements

Previous experience in an aviation, automotive or similar embedded systems development environment is helpful as it demonstrates understanding of working to rigorous industry mandated development standards; for example, ARP4754A. This shows a knowledge of working with complex system designs, for implementation in hardware and software.

An appropriate degree or HND in Engineering, Mathematics, Applied Physics or similar subject, or equivalent experience shows a logical mindset, alongside good problem solving and solution building skills.

Experience of the systems design lifecycle will help you in activities such as capturing, understanding and documenting the customer’s system and testing requirements. Strong understanding of what makes a good requirement and how this impacts validation. Good appreciation of baseline management is essential. Knowledge of different verification strategies and test equipment will aid in creating, updating and performing systems tests – be it script-based automated tests, or writing procedures for manual actions. Knowledge of test infrastructure and design of testing facilities is key to success in this role.

Deep enough experience will allow you to contribute to modifying power distribution systems architectures in co-operation with technical leads and with aircraft manufacturers based on feedback received from the test facility you will help define.

Desired Characteristics

You will be required to work in a team environment, so good written and verbal communication skills will make you (& the team) most effective. You will be asked to participate in technical and programme reviews to business leads, as well as even the end customer! A positive attitude, initiative, pro-activeness and an enthusiasm and passion for systems engineering will help you succeed in the department. Our goal as a team is to demonstrate success in achieving and exceeding customer expectations. Does this sound like something you would like to be part of?
