Overview Of Role

Thorn SDS is a niche Managed Service Provider with a Head Office based in Alton, Hampshire, who is committed to enabling technology organisations and professionals to thrive within the Space, Defence and Security sectors.

We are currently looking for a range of talented and motivated IT Engineers to support a major defence project based in the Hereford area. Opportunities include Network Engineers, Server Engineers, Installation Engineers, and IT Specialists, along with other skillsets, providing technical support and systems integration in a high-security environment.

Primary Roles:

  • Network Engineers – Design, configure, and maintain secure network infrastructure
  • Server Engineers – Build, support, and optimise Windows and Linux-based server environments
  • Installation Engineers – Deploy and configure hardware, cabling, and IT systems onsite
  • IT Engineers – Deliver desktop support, user administration, and technical troubleshooting

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver and maintain secure IT systems aligned with project and security requirements
  • Carry out installation, configuration, and support activities across varied IT environments
  • Work collaboratively with technical teams and project stakeholders
  • Troubleshoot issues, apply fixes, and maintain documentation
  • Ensure adherence to cyber security protocols and operational standards

Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in a relevant IT engineering role (network/server/desktop/installation)
  • Demonstrated capability within a defence environment.
  • Strong understanding of IT infrastructure, hardware, and software support
  • Familiarity with secure or regulated IT environments
  • Ability to work on-site in a team and independently under strict security protocols
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in defence, government, or other high-assurance sectors
  • Certifications such as CompTIA, Cisco (CCNA), Microsoft (MCSA/MCSE), ITIL, etc.
