Intern - Operations Centre Network Engineer

Network engineering is constantly changing, where a willingness to learn and a keenness to stay on top of new and innovative technologies is essential. GÉANT are leading the way in large scale, advanced networking infrastructure, technology and collaboration for research and education. We are offering a 12-month placement within our Network Operations Centre for those undertaking a placement year (starting Summer 2026) as part of their University degree in a Computing Science, Networking or related degree. GÉANT assists in high profile research and academic organisations providing connectivity communication services to the research and education communities across Europe. The role is within the GÉANT Operations Centre which monitors and manages the operational multi-gigabit network serving 40 national Research and Education Networks (NRENs) across Europe. The network comprises both layer 3 IP and optical transmission layers. You will also have the opportunity to work with the other specialist networking teams within the organisation on other projects. For example, GÉANT is part way through a project to refresh its entire optical network and the successful candidate may have an opportunity to get involved in this process during what is expected to be a busy time for the organisation. The closing date for this position will be 9 November 2025. We will hold the first stage interviews on 18 November via zoom and the second stage face to face interviews on 26 November 2025 in our Cambridge office.
You need to be currently enrolled at a UK University as an undergraduate studying a course involving Computing, Networking and/or IT and able to undertake a placement year at our Cambridge site. You need to have undertaken two years at University and will complete a further year of education following your internship. To be successful in this role you must demonstrate a keen interest in technologies such as Networking protocols, Optical Transmission Systems, Virtual Machine Technology concepts, Operating systems (Microsoft Server and LINUX variants), Network Application Services. You should enjoy being challenged and be open to learning new things which can be applied to your studies. We are looking for someone who enjoys working in an open and collaborative manner.
