Our National Innovation & Capital Tax Reliefs Team work with a range of companies, from start-ups to multinationals, to assist them in the preparation of claims for Research & Development tax relief. We work with companies across all sectors, most notably manufacturing, engineering, life sciences, software and digital technologies to assist them to identify and prepare successful tax relief claims. The variety of projects and impressive client list will challenge you every day, helping you expand your capabilities and grow professionally.

This is an exciting opportunity for an Innovation Reliefs Associate Director to work in an actively growing, specialist Innovation Reliefs tax team at RSM. This role can be based in any of our Southern region offices (Bristol, Gatwick, Guildford, Reading or Southampton).

You will make an impact by:


  • Developing claim methodologies and manage the preparation of R&D tax relief claims for submission to HMRC.
  • Leading interviews with clients’ technical and finance teams to advise on the R&D tax relief and to assist with identification of qualifying R&D activities and expenditure.
  • Demonstrating your expertise in writing technical descriptions of the client’s projects to include in the reports.
  • Identifying, leading on, and progressing business development opportunities, pitching for work with both new and existing clients.

  • Experience in preparing and submitting R&D tax relief claims in all sectors (experience of making patent box claims would be desirable but not essential).
  • Strong level of tax technical knowledge of the UK’s R&D tax incentives.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience in preparing and submitting R&D tax relief claims across sectors.
  • Clear and concise writing style.
  • Ability to make claims within SME and RDEC regimes, and capability to assess group size.
