AtkinsRéalis is a world-leading design, engineering and project management organisation. We connect people, data and technology to transform infrastructure and deliver sustainable solutions. Our Rail Systems business is at the forefront of delivering complex, multi-disciplinary rail infrastructure projects across the UK and internationally. We work across the whole project life cycle from development, design, construction and entry into service.

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Design Delivery Director to lead a significant programme of railway related Buildings and Civils design works flowing from our involvement in the Southern Integrated Delivery (SID). As the Signalling partner in the SID, we have the opportunity to expand our remit to support the other partners around design, specifically the Buildings and Civils partner - Volker Fitzpatrick. This is a Project 13 Enterprise which will deliver all of the railway infrastructure renewals until 20234 in Network Rail’s Southern Region. This is a high-impact delivery & leadership role, responsible for driving strategic client engagement, ensuring delivery excellence and fostering a culture of innovation, safety, and inclusion. Being the “face of AtkinsRealis” to Volker Fitzpatrick and coordinating our design efforts across our various UK based design teams from both Transportation and Infrastructure, the Global Technology Centres and our strategic supply chain

Your Purpose

The successful candidate must be able to build strong relationships with a partner, in a highly collaborative (Project 13) environment - generally based with the partner and end client in a shared office. Through this engagement, the Design Delivery Director will be able to interpret the end client (Network Rail Capable Owner) and partners requirements, ensuring the designs reflect the Minimum Viable solution to the specific renewal in a safe, efficient and construable way - making use of lean techniques such as Modern Methods of Construction and Construction to Production best practice. You will also provide strategic project leadership across a whole range of Buildings and Civils renewals projects, including:

  • Engaging with the end client and various representatives of our SID partner (Volker Fitzpatrick) to build trusted relationships and maximise the number of design opportunities for AtkinsRealis.
  • Utilise strategic thinking with our partner to focus on outcomes that satisfy the end clients expectations whilst deliver the most economically advantageous solution for the SID and meeting the KPIs that determine the success of the SID.
  • Leading and developing high-performing teams to deliver world-class engineering and construction solutions on time and within budget.
  • Championing safety, environmental responsibility, and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I) across all delivery teams.
  • Leading solution development and contributing to winning proposals for high-value opportunities.
  • Ensuring robust change management and risk mitigation strategies are in place.
  • Promoting digital innovation and new ways of working to enhance project outcomes.

What You Can Bring

  • Demonstrable commitment to HSQE with strong leadership in HSQE on own projects.
  • Experience of managing the implementation of Buildings and Civils type design projects from early inception to close out of “as-built” records.
  • Experience of managing sub-contracts as a means of delivering the design of key or specialist aspects of the solution or where “internal” resources are constrained; working closely with AtkinsRealis practice leads to ensure the optimal resource utilisation.
  • A track record of innovation, embracing new ways of working and use of digital tools.
  • Experience of Design & Build either working in a Contractor organisation or within a Design based organisation working with contractors - can demonstrate great ability to control these activities.
  • Great client and stakeholder management skills. Able to build great relationships with Clients to optimise outcomes for Clients and the business.
  • Be able to form trusted relationships and have the ability to create a high performing team.
  • Be able to demonstrate good control of project risk & change management, understanding of the risks and opportunities associated with risk & change.
  • Knowledge of different contracting types, especially target cost. Experience of resolving commercial disputes, leveraging contracts to grow opportunities.
  • Track record of delivering projects to budget and improving financial performance.
  • Proficient in programme planning and milestone reporting.
  • Focused on precision planning, quality delivery and minimising rework.
