The opportunity has arisen to join an industry leader within the Decarbonisation sector as a Health, Safety & Environmental Manager (HSE).

Alternative Heat specialise in the design, offsite prefabrication, modularisation, and onsite installation of prefabricated mechanical and electrical services for decarbonisation projects throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland, with a core focus on mechanical fit-out and supply of packaged mechanical and electrical plantrooms.

With projected growth, we are seeking a proactive HSE Manager to lead and manage all health, safety, and environmental aspects/teams across these projects, to ensure compliance, reduce risk, and promote a culture of safety & wellbeing throughout our operations.


The candidate will work closely with our in-house teams throughout client engagement and all construction stages to deliver suitable HSE management arrangements, to meet both client/legal requirements to ensure the safe on site delivery of district heating systems and energy saving solutions.


In addition to maintaining our current standards, they will be expected to drive continual improvements through established and innovative means, with a strong focus on behavioral safety.

The Health, Safety & Environmental Manager will establish themselves as our client’s main point of contact for HSE matters, through Head Office and site-based visits in order to build strong client relationships and support functions.


The HSE Manager, will report to the Head of Health & Safety, and will work closely with project delivery teams, client representatives, and the wider HSE team to ensure a safe, compliant, and sustainable operating environment in a rapidly expanding market sector.

Hours: 38 hours per week; 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Thursday, 8:00am to 3:00pm Friday

With site travel required.

Salary: Competitive depending on experience

What are we expecting from this role?

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in managing Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) functions within the Commercial M&E, Building Services, or Construction sectors. The candidate will demonstrate a strong ability to implement, maintain and develop robust HSE programs across large-scale, complex contracts.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience working collaboratively with project teams during all phases of pre-construction and construction, including risk assessments, site inspections, compliance monitoring, and incident management. They will be adept at influencing key stakeholders and driving a positive safety culture to ensure regulatory compliance and the wellbeing of all personnel.

This role will involve close collaboration with senior leadership, including Clients and Project and remote teams, to integrate HSE considerations into planning or and project delivery, ensuring that health, safety, and environmental requirements are fully embedded throughout the project lifecycle.


Core Responsibilities of role:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain HSE policies, procedures, and programs aligned with legal requirements, industry standards, and client expectations for Decarbonisation projects across multiple locations (UK and Ireland).
  • Conduct regular site inspections, risk assessments, and audits to monitor compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and reporting, ensuring timely corrective actions and continuous improvement.
  • Provide expert HSE advice and support to project teams during all phases including design, offsite prefabrication, modularisation, and onsite installation.
  • Collaborate closely with HSE officers, operation teams, client representatives, and subcontractors to embed safe working practices and environmental stewardship into daily operations.
  • Drive HSE training and awareness programs to build competency and engagement across all teams.
  • Monitor and report on HSE performance metrics, ensuring transparency and effective communication with senior management and stakeholders.
  • Facilitate client HSE audits and site visits, acting as the primary point of contact for all health, safety, and environmental matters.
  • Support the expansion of HSE best practices as the company grows into new locations and regions within Europe.


Team Development and Leadership:

  • Identify, recruit, and onboard qualified Health and Safety Officers to build a competent and motivated HSE team aligned with company values and project demands.
  • Design and implement ongoing training programs to enhance the technical skills, regulatory knowledge, and leadership capabilities of Health and Safety Officers, ensuring they stay current with industry best practices and legal requirements.
  • Provide hands-on mentoring and support to team members, fostering professional growth and confidence in their roles. Regularly conduct performance reviews, set clear objectives, and encourage continuous improvement.
  • Effectively allocate and manage the team’s resources across multiple projects and sites to maintain consistent HSE oversight and timely response to issues.
  • Promote open communication within the team and with other departments, ensuring Health and Safety Officers collaborate effectively with project managers, site personnel, and client representatives.
  • Establish clear expectations and accountability for Health and Safety Officers, ensuring adherence to company policies, legal standards, and client requirements. Implement quality control measures to monitor the effectiveness of safety interventions.


Essential Criteria:

  • Demonstrable experience (5 years minimum) as an HSE Manager or similar role within construction, mechanical, electrical or energy saving sectors, understanding the unique HSE challenges they present.
  • Strong knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation, standards, and industry best practices (e.g., ISO 45001, ISO 14001).
  • Relevant certifications such as NEBOSH or International Diploma and equivalent environmental qualifications.
  • Experience in leading, developing, and managing a team of HSE Officers or similar professionals.
  • Ability to conduct risk assessments, site inspections, audits, and incident investigations with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Excellent communication skills to influence, train, and engage multidisciplinary teams, senior management, and client stakeholders.
  • Capability to oversee HSE activities across multiple projects and sites in different locations, managing priorities and resources effectively.
  • Strong skills in data analysis and reporting to monitor HSE performance metrics and drive improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to embed a positive safety culture and promote environmental sustainability in a fast-paced, expanding business environment.
  • Skilled in identifying root causes of incidents and implementing practical, effective corrective actions.


Desired Criteria:

  • Experience with sustainability initiatives, including carbon footprint reduction and waste management strategies.
  • Familiarity with digital HSE management systems and software tools to streamline reporting, audits, and compliance tracking.
