As the Head of HR, you will provide strategic leadership and hands-on support across all people-related functions within the charity. Your primary focus will be on driving volunteer retention, engagement, and the overall volunteer experience.

You will oversee the full volunteer life cycle, from recruitment to exit, while leading the Talent Acquisition (TA) and HR Operations teams. You’ll collaborate with senior leadership to shape HR strategies and practices that align with the organisation’s goals and values.

What are we looking for?
- Experience in developing and executing HR strategies. Within SMEs or start-up environments focused on growth and scale is a plus.
- Demonstrated experience in managing remote teams, including Talent Acquisition and HR Operations.
- An understanding of the voluntary sector and its unique challenges, with a proactive, hands-on approach to problem-solving.
- Proficiency in G-Suite, Slack, and basic technology tools (e.g., laptops) to facilitate remote work.
You will oversee the full volunteer life cycle, from recruitment to exit, while leading the Talent Acquisition (TA) and HR Operations teams. You’ll collaborate with senior leadership to shape HR strategies and practices that align with the organisation’s goals and values.
Core Duties
Strategy & Leadership
- Develop and execute GMF’s HR strategy, ensuring alignment with the charity’s overall mission and goals.
- Build and nurture trusted relationships with senior leaders, leveraging key people metrics to identify needs and deliver actionable HR solutions.
- Provide regular updates to the organisation on HR initiatives, key metrics, and progress.
- Lead the development and continuous growth of the Talent Acquisition (TA) team, aligning hiring strategies with GMF’s evolving needs and growth.
- Implement effective succession planning and retention strategies to minimize volunteer turnover and ensure long-term engagement.
- Design and execute short- and long-term engagement initiatives that support GMF’s mission and goals.
- Ensure volunteer feedback is actively captured, analyzed, and acted upon to drive improvements.
- Continually review and enhance onboarding and off-boarding processes to ensure a seamless experience that aligns TA and HR operations.
- Develop and implement training initiatives to enhance the volunteer experience and support their growth within the organisation.
- Create, review, and update HR policies, procedures, and guidelines as needed to ensure compliance and best practices.
- Ensure all HR practices and policies are in line with current legislation and reflect GMF’s values and culture.
- Oversee the HR systems, ensuring they meet the needs of the organisation and are maintained accurately.
- Take responsibility for the training and support of volunteers in the use of Charlie HR, ensuring effective system adoption.
- Manage and support the Talent Acquisition Manager and HR Manager, empowering them to lead their respective teams effectively.
- Lead and scale the HR and TA teams as GMF grows, including supporting teams during one-off events.
