Main duties of the job
Within General Surgery we are delighted to provide the opportunity for you to join our GI Surgical Nurse Practitioner team. This is a 9-month secondment. The role will predominately be based in Colorectal with some exposure in Upper GI and HPB surgery. You will be working within the ANP/ACP team alongside our medical teams, MDT, and surgical ward teams. All applicants must have recent acute care experience either in a surgical or critical care role.
The team are pivotal in supporting the patient journey in order to increase patient experience, reduce length of stay and avoid hospital re admission, whilst seeking innovative ways to support our most complex patients. You may be required to support the wider nurse practitioner team which may include working within other surgical specialities such as acute surgery.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities and Expanded Roles
- To be actively involved in the care of all patients within GI Surgery
- Within agreed protocols, Utilise the clerking protocol to take a full medical history of patients admitted within a specific specialty.
- Perform physical assessment and examination of above patients in order to make a differential diagnosis and implement an appropriate management plan.
- Within agreed protocols order investigations including blood (as determined by physical examination), interpret results and act appropriately on the findings.
- Venesection and cannulation of patients as required within unit / procedure guidelines
- Insert urinary catheters when required.
- To provide relevant individualised health promotion / education to this patient group.
- To work collaboratively with all members of the multi-professional team (MPT).
- Recognise own limitations and effectively seek appropriate help / assistance.
- To record assessment findings and management plans in a timely manner with the patients medical notes.
- Effectively communicate patient care and changes to the relevant members of the MPT. Handing over to senior medical colleagues when appropriate.
- If required within specialty to attend all emergencies such as cardiac / respiratory arrest.
- To effectively manage patient enquiries. To facilitate the reception of patients and their relatives in a calm, friendly, courteous and reassuring manner.
- To keep patients and relatives informed of progress, treatment and involved in decision making.
- As a Non Medical prescriber write patients not including medications (once full training and competence achieved ** if relevant within specialty)
- To uphold confidentiality to patients and relatives at all times and in all situations according to Trust Policy.
- To undertake appraisals of junior members of the Nurse Practitioner Team if required
- During periods of absence you will undertake the management duties of the senior
- Responsible for maintaining a high standard of evidence based care.
- Liaising with members of the MDT to ensure that treatments are carried out correctly in accordance with trust and local policy.
- To be professionally accountable for own actions and recognise the professional codes of others working within the team
- To actively contribute to the clinical governance agenda
- To encourage staff to be innovative in the development of patient care using evidence based practice.
- Offer support and guidance to other staff within specific wards departments as required.
- Participate in innovation and change concerned with improving the standards of care for patients.
- To promote the concept of work-based and inter-professional learning
- Maintains continuing professional development as required for the Nursing and Midwifery Council
- Take on a specific area of interest / project / audit / link role and develop as a resource for this.
- To attend meetings pertaining to the job and the unit as required

- Completion of Nursing Degree
- Evidence of supporting learners in practice

- Completion of HTPA Competencies or equivalent experience
- Significant Post Registration Experience within chosen specialty
- Completion of all Trainee Nurse Practitioner Band 5 competencies
- ILS trained or equivalent experience
- Broad awareness of wider Trust initiatives / pressures
- Independent Non Medical Prescribing Qualification
- Registered on MSc Pathway as an experienced practitioner
- Further study at Level 7 within relevant pathway
- Leadership qualification (RCN, LDC, Edward Jenner, Elizabeth Garret Anderson, Nye Bevan)
- Evidence of ability to change or initiate practice
