The role
We’re looking for a Data Network Engineer to take a hands-on role in the full lifecycle of our network solutions. From initial design through to implementation, support, and ongoing improvement, you’ll be working across a diverse and evolving environment, supporting the secure and reliable operation of SSE Transmission’s growing energy network.
This isn’t just about keeping the lights on. It’s about building and maintaining robust, fit-for-purpose networks that connect remote sites, substations, and control systems across Scotland. You’ll work with a range of technologies and have the opportunity to shape how we deliver connectivity in a critical infrastructure setting.

You will
- Contribute to the design and delivery of network solutions within the Cyber Resilience for Operational Technology (CROT) Programme, working closely with colleagues and applying agreed standards.
- Provide specialist input on the Operational Technology (OT) network, supporting its development, maintenance, and ongoing improvement.
- Build and maintain a detailed understanding of the network topology (physical and logical), across LAN and WAN environments, including hands-on discovery where needed.
- Support the development of network strategy as part of the wider OT roadmap, collaborating with suppliers to help bring strategic plans into action.
- Assess network risks and help shape practical mitigations, while exploring new technologies and approaches that could strengthen resilience and performance.
- Solid experience in designing and implementing network solutions, with a good working knowledge of LAN, WAN, QoS, and firewall technologies.
- A strong understanding of network security principles and the ability to apply practical mitigations in real-world environments.
- Clear and confident communication skills. Able to explain technical concepts to different audiences and contribute to documentation, designs, and discussions.
- A methodical approach to problem-solving, with the ability to turn ideas and requirements into workable plans, designs, or reports.
- Hands-on experience with Palo Alto firewalls and Cisco networking, ideally covering both design and operational aspects.
