Job Introduction

Want to join a team that works with passion and purpose to power a network that nearly 8 million customers rely on every day? If you share our energy and ambition, this could be your opportunity to build a career with a supportive team in an environment where everyone is empowered to do their best and be their best.

We have two vacancies for a Craftsperson (Overhead Lines) based in Hereford depot.

In this role you will be required to undertake construction, maintenance, replacement and repair of overhead lines up to and including 66kV. This is a diverse role that will see you working in all kinds of challenging terrain and weather. You will work at height so experience of this will be beneficial.

Candidates are required to have Grade A*-C/4-9 GCSE in English and Maths or Functional Skills Level qualification in both subjects.

  • Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.

Ideal Candidate

The successful applicant will ideally have experience of working on overhead cables or at height, however consideration will be given to those candidates who have the confidence and ability to reach the necessary standards with appropriate training. If not already attained you will be required to study for the relevant City & Guilds qualification and complete TAR, which includes daily diary completion and a number of tasks and reports as required.

You must be able to work on your own initiative as part of a small team, making on the spot decisions as required and working to tight deadlines. A flexible attitude is essential, as you will be required to undertake other duties to assist the team in meeting its objectives. In addition, you will need to be mobile throughout the area as you may be required to undertake standby duties.

Operationally we require you to live within approximately 60 minutes of the depot you are applying for.

Please note that potential candidates should be aware that for some of the National Grid positions that require working at height, or use fall arrest devices, there is an upper weight limit of 130kg without equipment due to maximum safe working load of the safety equipment that is used.

National Grid Electricity Distribution is committed to safeguarding the interests of the Company, colleagues and customers. This role is subject to a satisfactory Barring Service (DBS) check. Depending on the role, different levels of screening and vetting are required. Some roles require a triannual check.
