Clinical nurse specialists are recognised internationally, as expert practitioners have an in depth knowledge of a speciality that results and expanding boundaries of nursing practice and the implementation of evidence based practice and clinical research.
Clinical practice is central to the clinical nurse specialist rule, however in order to influence and improve nursing practice, it is essential the role is underpinned by the competencies outlined in the job description.
Due to the diversity of the CNS role key accountability and key performance indicators will vary according to the patient/ population and service needs. Therefore, the key performance indicators will be determined by the individual service and will be based on the key accountabilities as outlined in this generic job description.

Main duties of the job
- Provide expert nursing knowledge in the management of patient care within defined area of social practice, working with the patient, family or other health professionals to provide timely nursing care to optimise outcomes.
- Uses advanced health assessment skills in the assessment of patients and critiques own practice to maintain clinical competence.
- Prescribes, advanced evidence, base nursing therapeutics, pharmacological/non pharmacological intervention, diagnostic measures, equipment procedures and treatments to meet the needs of patients, families and groups in accordance with professional preparation, institutional policies and scope of practice.
- Role models expert evidence-based clinical practice, is seen as highly effective, progressive and knowledgeable.
- Guides and supports others in the speciality in their assessment, clinical decision-making implementation evaluation and documentation of care.
- Provides leadership, role models and guides others in nursing practice.
- Networks nationally and internationally to identify and implement nursing advances and changes in practice.
- Identifies opportunities for general health, wellness education e.g smoking cessation.

- Be registered with the nursing and midwifery council
- Post registration experience working either within the clinical speciality or relevant senior nursing role
- Holds or is actively working towards a relevant postgraduate degree degree to be completed within an agreed time frame
- Demonstrate nursing skills comparable to senior nurse, working at this level
- Demonstrate skills in nursing leadership
- Obtained or working towards relevant clinical masters
- Demonstrates ability to develop nursing standards and quality initiatives
- Demonstrates teaching mentoring or coaching skills,
- Demonstrate involvement in research that as changing nursing practice
- Module or qualification speciality area
Essential criteria
- Experience and credibility with the healthcare team, as a professional resource in speciality practice area
- Networking effectively in area of speciality or practice
- Demonstrated ability to articulate evidence-based nursing advice to a multidisciplinary team
- Post registration practice within the defined scope of clinical speciality or practice
Skills (Including those skills needed for the post)
- Exercise independent nursing judgement, apply advanced assessment skills, initiate appropriate clinical interventions, evaluate outcomes, advise others and provide sound rationale for actions, in area of speciality or practice
- Work independently as part of a multidisciplinary team, using evidence practice in area, speciality
- Initiate health promotion activities to encourage productive health behaviours and foster the strengths and potential of patients and staff
- Be a professional leader and role model with proven ability to inspire, motivate and develop others in area of speciality
- Be champion for and promote the profession of nursing.
- IT skills e.g. Microsoft package
- Carry out catheter insertion, venepuncture dressings when in clinics or clinical care at bedside
