About Us

BEAM is Hertford’s newest theatre, having opened its doors just a year ago. In that short time, we’ve welcomed an exciting mix of touring productions, in-house shows and film, and we’re quickly becoming a vibrant hub for live performance and cinema in the community.

To keep up with our growing programme, we’re expanding our technical team. This is an exciting time for you to join us and develop your career as we seek to strengthen and deepen the programme of films, theatre, live events and community work in our 550-seat theatre, 150-seat studio theatre, dance studio, community room and 3 dedicated cinemas

The Role

As a Casual Theatre Technician, you’ll play a key role in delivering high-quality productions at BEAM. You’ll work closely with the permeant technicians to support touring companies and our in-house programming team to provide technical support.

Some of the key responsibilities of the Casual Technician Role include:

  • To assist with the get-ins and get-outs, including loading and unloading of vehicles.
  • To undertake lighting and sound tasks as necessary.
  • To have at least a basic understanding of electrical safety in temporary electrical installations.
  • To help build scenic elements of incoming shows and ensure current health and safety guidance is followed in discharging these duties.
  • To operate lighting and sound or fulfil stage duties for shows.
  • To promptly communicate any issues to the Deputy Technical Manager or Technical and Production Manager.
  • Maintain and clean the backstage areas of the theatre when necessary.
  • To help other departments with occasional manual labour.

No two days are the same: one week you might be running sound for a comedy tour, the next you could be helping bring our co-produced pantomime to life.

About You

The ideal person for the Casual Technician Role will have:

  • Experience in Technical disciplines across a range of live events.
  • Experience in specific or multiple show operation disciplines.
  • Experience in technical work in a theatrical setting.
  • Experience in maintaining technical theatre equipment and stage engineering.
  • Ability to read lighting, sound and stage design plans.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of Technical Theatre risk assessments and Health and Safety issues.

What We Offer

  • The chance to work in a dynamic, supportive team at a young and thriving theatre
  • Opportunities for in-house training and professional development
  • A varied workload with exposure to a wide range of productions

Candidates must be 18+.
