The Bowel Screening Practitioner will participate as a member of the nursing and multi-disciplinary team providing high standards of evidence-based care in the delivery of the Welsh bowel screening programme. They will be the first point of contact for participants who have received a positive Faecal Immunochemical Test and will provide specialist advice, support and continuity of care throughout the participant pathway. This will include assessing a participant’s fitness for colonoscopy, attending a colonoscopy, managing the results handling process, referral to the appropriate multi-disciplinary teams, data collection/spreadsheet work and correct use of the BSW IT system.
The successful candidate will maintain good channels of communication between the Health Board and the BSW central administration team in Llantrisant and attend programme updates and meetings at Llantrisant when necessary. The post will be based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital but to provide continuity of service across BCUHB, during times of leave and sickness there is an expectation that the successful candidate may need to travel to the other screening centres in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and Ysbyty Gwynedd.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
The Bowel Screening Practitioner will participate as a member of the nursing and multidisciplinary team within the Welsh bowel screening programme.
They will be the first point of contact for participants who have received a positive Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) and will provide specialist advice, support and continuity of care throughout the participant pathway. This will include making an assessment of fitness for colonoscopy, attending colonoscopy, managing the results handling process and referral to the multidisciplinary team if appropriate.
Ability to work autonomously providing nurse led telephone assessment clinics and face to face assessments in an outpatient setting. Perform comprehensive assessment of patient needs, Plan, implement and evaluate care according to BSW pathways.
Manage a caseload of participants and co-ordinate individualised participant care from assessment, through the screening colonoscopy journey, as well as the management of participants entered onto a surveillance programme.
To analyse and appraise endoscopic and histological findings, liaising with clinical colleagues, to ensure suitable surveillance, treatment or referral pathways are implemented.
Ensure patient records for the screening services are completed to include data on treatment, staging and outcomes provided by the multi-disciplinary team.

- 1st Level live Registration Health care related Degree or relevant experience
- Clinical experience in Colorectal/Gastroenterology, Oncology or acute clinical setting
- Experience of managing a case load
- An ability to prioritise work and to deliver results to deadlines.
- Good personal organisation skills, able to work independently & as part of a team
- Ability to review own performance & use of reflective practice for self-development
- Some understanding of the BSW service
